L'Ameillaud Cairanne 2012

Winemaker's Notes:

If one was to describe quite simply the style of wines produced at the Ameillaud, there are probably three key words : maturity, generosity and balance. Southern Rhône grape-varieties have an important aromatic potential, and at l'Ameillaud we try to enhance this. When fermenting, we seek to protect this fruit expression whilst working to obtain a certain level of tannic support, giving sufficient structure to ensure several years of maturing, but nothing excessive.

Racy and fresh, with lovely cassis and raspberry fruit that stretches out over red licorice and fruitcake notes. Reveals a graphite underpinning on the finish. Drink now through 2015.

A blend of 55% Grenache, 30% Syrah and the rest Carignan and Mourvèdre, the 2012 Cairanne is a big, fruit forward and sexy Cairanne that gives up lots of pepper, violets and jammy blackberry fruit. Medium to full-bodied, with good purity, with low acidity and lots of ripeness, drink it over the coming 4–6 years.

Gutsy and youthful, with dark plum and black currant fruit layered with fruitcake, fig bread and anise notes, followed by a mouthfilling finish. Should open up nicely with brief cellaring. Drink now through 2012.

From the much-anticipated 2009 vintage, this is a benchmark for a great under-$20 Rhône. Lush and soft, but with great earth and spice notes to balance the deep black fruit. Though excellent now, it has the structure to stand up for several years, so don’t be afraid to pick up a case.
