Lambert Bridge Merlot Blend Dry Creek Valley 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

With a small yield of about two tons per acre the 2007 Merlot is best described as supple, silky and complexly layered. Right away you will notice concentrated yet bright colors that can be attributed to the small amounts of Malbec and Petite Verdot in the final blend. The contiguous aromatics and flavors of this wine range from black cherry, to plum, dried rose petals, pie spices and pomegranate. We have added to the complexity of this wine by utilizing multiple coopers as well as various ages of French Oak. Finally you will be greeted by lush texture and supple yet full tannins with just the right amount of grip. This wine would perfectly compliment a pork loin with roasted winter vegetables and a delicate pomegranate reduction.

Some dark fruit but with some red fruitiness, bit of apple peel, pencil shavings, hint of leather. Light to medium bodied, moderate finish of lightly peppered minerals.

I bought this at a restaurant inventory clearance sale and was a little worried about the age, but was pleasantly surprised. Still has a good, smokey blackberry, black cherry, black pepper and smokey cedar nose. On the palate, a very clean, smooth medium body balance of blackberry, tart plum, beef jerky (works for me: meaty, smokey and peppery) and licorice, with nice, fairly long peppery, smokey finish. And still just a hint of dustiness left in the tannins. This was a luscious, flavorful experience! And did I mention smoke - it's a start to finish theme!

This is a Gold Medal Wine Club Gold Series selection. Steve and Elaine Wynn of Las Vegas fame chose the Lambert Bridge 2001 Merlot as one of their top 10 selected wines to be served in every restaurant at their Wynn Luxury Resort’s grand opening. The Connoisseur’s Guide to California Wine wrote, “With lots of oaky richness leading the way, this attractive wine also delivers plenty of ripe red cherry fruit in its outgoing aromas and repeats that fruit in caramel- and roasted vanilla bean-influenced flavors. A stratum of latter palate tannins will want a few years of bottle aging in order to fully smooth out—89 points.” The Sacramento Bee recommended the Lambert Merlot as one of “The All-Stars—guaranteed to please even the most picky of wine enthusiasts.” Well-balanced and refined, I’m biased toward pork with merlot, but this excellent wine can pair well with lamb, beef and duck”. This is an excellent Sonoma County Merlot. Drink now or hold until 2010.
