Editorial Reviews for Lagrange St Julien
Opening fairly toasty with a bit of green herb and bell pepper right up front before settling into a slightly roasted, tarry blackberry vein with notes of vanilla, buttery oak, and fudge under the roasted meat and herb notes. This is fairly full bodied with a big pop of sweet fruit on the attack. Opulent and round with blackberry and cassis fruit and quite some tannins as well as balancing acidity. The finish reveals a bit of earth and licorice as well as black spice and cigar ash before a final note of toasty oak. The oak is a bit more than I would like but the fruit should support it well.
User Reviews for Lagrange St Julien
Add your reviewRobert Parker 91 Points Sweet, toasty, oaky notes interwoven with hints of black olives, blackberries, cassis, and spice box are found in this densely saturated ruby/purple-hued 2005. While rich, with impressive concentration and purity, it is also tannic, full-bodied, and painfully backward and foreboding. This is another long-term prospect that will require patience. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2027. Wine Spectator 93 Points Currant, mineral, plum and light toasty oak follow through to a full body, with ultrasilky tannins and a long, caressing finish. This is thoroughly beautiful. Superbalanced and very pretty. Best after 2011. 24,165 cases made. -JS International Wine Cellar 91 Points Medium red-ruby. Reticent but sweet nose offers plum, black cherry, minerals and bitter chocolate. Thick and powerful but with excellent vinosity and sweetness as well as a slightly exotic character to the red fruit and spice flavors. Deep, slow-mounting wine that builds impressively on the back end. The tannins here make those of the 2006 seem a bit rigid by comparison. I was struck by the thought that Lagrange has done consistently well in the last three vintages, and that each effort is an accurate reflection of its year.

(46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot & 9% Petit Verdot) The color is opaque blackberry with purple at the edge. To the nose, the wine is deep, rich and reserved. The palate is more revealing, rich, expansive and warm with sweet ripe fruit and a ripe tannic frame. A large-scaled Lagrange of excellent quality that is sure to deliver enormous pleasure.
Already well-known in the middle Ages under the name of Maison Noble de Lagrange Monteil, Chateau Lagrange is located in the Saint-Julien appellation. The estate currently covers 157 hectares of land, of which 115 are under vine, in a single block. The vineyard is planted on two Gunzian gravel rises. Production methods combine the best of traditional and modern methods. Vine density per hectare is high and the soil is cultivated in the classic Medoc manner. The grapes are handpicked and sorted prior to crushing. Traditional Bordeaux winemaking procedures are used and fermentation lakes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. The wine is aged in oak barrels (of which 60% are new every year) in an air conditioned cellar.
Aromas of currants, berries, licorice and spice. Full-bodied and very velvety, with wonderful, high quality tannins. Long finish. Balanced and classy. Wine Spectator. A Bordeaux Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 2005 Lagrange St Julien 1500ml
