Lagier Meredith Syrah Mt. Veeder 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

Wine Advocate # 174 Dec 2007 Robert Parker 95 Drink 2007 - 2015 I have always enjoyed the elegant, French-styled Syrahs from this winery, and this 2005 appears to be the finest they have yet produced. A beautiful deep ruby/purple hue is accompanied by aromas of blueberries, black raspberries, spice, and ground pepper. Displaying a seamless integration of acidity, alcohol, tannin, and wood, winemaker/proprietor Carol Meredith has fashioned a brilliant Syrah offering substance and style. With full body, superb balance, a silky texture, and a fascinating mouthfeel, it can be drunk now as well as over the next 7-8 years.

Lagier Meredith Syrah is a vineyard wine. Our responsibility is to safeguard the wine during its passage from vineyard to bottle and to protect it from too much winemaking. Year after year, our vineyard produces wine that is complex, balanced and consummately integrated. It's whole wine that's much more than the sum of its parts. Rich, dark, smooth and seamless. Our Syrah has been described as having one foot in the Northern Rhône and one foot in Northern California. The flavor is reminiscent of the Northern Rhône with its spice and white pepper and violet aromas, but it has more extract and body. In many red wines, big color usually means big tannin, but (for reasons we may never understand) our wine is not harshly tannic so it drinks well when it is young. Read less

Big juicy berry/blueberry nose. Soft, huge but still elegant. Lightish tannin and acid. So velvety! Not big alcohol? Full mouthfeel. Light spiciness. Still needs some aging. Finesse.

(12/07) 92 points Wine Spectator: "Enticing floral, jasmine, wild berry and blueberry scents fold over on the palate, giving this sleek, focused youngster a tight beam of fruit and a touch of sage and game meat. The tannins are ripe and integrated. Drink now through 2013. 940 cases made." (Web 07) 92 points from Wine & Spirits Magazine: "This vintage from Steven Lagier and Carole Meredith's vineyard on Mount Veeder is fuller and deeper in tone than the previous two. It needs several hours in a decanter to spread beyond the confines of new oak and ripe fruit, yielding brighter crushed peppercorn scents. Cellar and then serve it with roast boar." (02/08)

Black and purple in the core with a pink and fuchsia rim. Big swarming dark aromas of blackberry, cassis and fig surround caramel, black olive, rose petals and a touch of wet earth.
