Ladera Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 2012

Member Review by zinfandel1:

A beautiful mountain cab. On the nose faint hints of stone fruit and in the background a faint hint of chocolate. This deep purple mountain cab has some tannins that will soften over the next year or two and have better access to the prevailing dark fruit and cedar. This, I think, will be much like their 2004 which is drinking beautifully right now.

Ladera Vineyards:
The Ladera story has many facets; each very important to us and our heritage. We focus on our wines but you can’t talk about wine without knowing about the winemaking and there would be no winemaking without a winery. Our 1886 stone winery is our history and its foundation supports the balance of our efforts.

The thing about wine for me is that the good ones elicit good memories more than they conjure up a bunch of silly comparisons to things people don't really taste in wine...like wet earth and pencils. Wet earth and pencils don't strike me as enjoyable attributes of a wine. I had this wine with my wife at a small restaurant in Palo Alto, CA while we were on a long weekend away from our little kids. Can't remember if I loved the wine, or if the dinner was memorable or if we had a nice conversation. In any event, if I spot this wine in the market, I'll buy it again.

This is classic mountain (Howell Mt.) cabernet sauvignon. The color couldn't be any darker. Bouquet is of dark fruits of plum and cherry and a hint of damp earth. On the palate an explosion of dark fruits, more than I would expect from a mountain cab, along with an earthiness. Tannins are there but really not overpowering. The finish is fairly long. This wine is drinkable now and possibly for several more years.

from San Francisco magazine: "A grand red for your more elegant holiday dinner parties, it makes a gorgeous accompaniment to that perfect filet mignon with a chanterelle ragout."

Ladera Cabernet from Howell Mountain is textbook, with deep fruit and excellent structure. Macerated blueberry and black cherry fruit character with notes of cinnamon spice and espresso, the wine is rich and full on the palate with firm tannins.

The most expensive offering is the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain. A classic Howell Mountain wine, it is tannic and backward with blueberry, blackberry and floral notes intermixed with lots of minerality as well as a boatload of tannin. This is a long-term wine so forget it for 3andndash;4 years and drink it over the following two decades.

The nose on this wine is floral yet fruity with rich blackberry and cocoa aromas. The entry is elegant and soft with flavors of dark cherries, blueberry, cocoa, and spiced plum.
