2006 Vina Zaco was chosen by Wine Spectator as one of their Top 100 Wines of 2009. Rioja Vina Zaco from Bodegas Bilbainas is a fruit-forward Tempranillo with just enough oak aging to add intriguing notes of complex spice and vanilla. 100% Tempranillo carefully vinified to bring out the rich fruit. A short cold-maceration is followed by a slow, cooler than normal fermentation with skin contact for a full two weeks to extract as much flavor and color as possible. Nine month in French and American oak followed for a complex intermingling of flavors both spicy and succulent. A great value!
Food Pairings for La Vicalanda Reserva
With brightly fruited Tempranillo from Rioja, this has more than Rioja’s usual fruit character of red and black cherries and plums. In addition to the mint and herbs that usually derive from Rioja, as well as its dusty rock notes, there is a lush and vibrant fruit salad greatly comprised of red and black raspberries and fresh and dried strawberries. It's very easy to drink now, but there is a tannic core to this wine that wants a bit more time.
