What to Expect

Montepulciano is a grape closely related with the Abuzzo region of Italy. The wines tend to be quite fruity and grapy and can range from rather lightly styled but still richly fruited to big, dense, spicy wines that have undergone extensive barrel ageing. While all Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is made with Montepulciano grapes not all Montepulciano wine is labelled as Montepulcinao d'Abruzzo. Rosso Conero and Rosso Piceno from the Marches region, for example, are made from Montepulcinao. Furthering the confusion is Tuscany's famed Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, which is, in fact, based on Sangiovese.

Reviews

Rating: 92/100 - As reviewed by The Wine Messenger Bouquet of balsam cedar and rosemary. Full-bodied wine. Impressive concentration and power. Both front and mid-palate have harmony. Long finish on flavors of overripe prunes and it has good depth. Ideal with roasts and strong cheeses. Decant before serving.

Rating: 92/100 - As reviewed by The Wine Messenger Power; Elegance; Great Value!

Dark brick/tile color. Bouquet of balsam, cedar and rosemary. Full-bodied wine, impressive by the concentration and the power of the Abruzzo. Both front and mid-palate have harmony. The tannins are pleasant and not obtrusive; the finish is long on flavors of overripe prunes and it has good depth. Powerful, elegant, but a wine to enjoy with food (big roasts or strong cheeses). Decant before serving.
