Lots of wood induced sweetness here but also plenty of raw, even green wood. This has the distressing aromas of water-based paint with plenty of baking spices, powdered ginger and green cardamom to make this a real mess. , Opens up with intense fleshy, slightly jammy red raspberry fruit too. A bit dull in the mouth, soft tannins up front, sweet red fruits on the mid-palate, round yet hollow like cheap Grenache and finishing with drying tannins. Pretty fruit with lots wild dark cherry, and spice, tones but neither natural feeling or particularly varietal. Tannins are splintery and really clamp down on the finish, which is short if quite lifesaver cherried. An extracted, modern, anonymous wine that smells bad. 75pts
The '04 "Pin", from La Spinetta REALLY benefitted from a half hour decant. The bled of Barbera & Nebbiolo, as mentioned elsewhere, truly is a "Super Piedmont". The structure of the Nebbiolo lends finesse to an aggressive and prominent display of both fruit and ever-evolving complexity. In truth; I felt like my old friend Nebbiolo was tutoring me concerning the finer note, aspects, and properties of some happily grown, rich, thick & intense Barbera. I still haven't been able to come up with a score on this one- but it paired damn well with a Gyro & some Moussaka. Wicked-good composition with opulent & macerated red fruits are followed by a fresh (and delicious) dark-cherried finish. ...Early 90's, easily.

Dense red. Complex, explosive bouquet of fruit, sweet spices, licorice and chocolate. The palate shows thick, concentrated dark berries and licorice, with an exceptional balance of sweet tannins and acidity. Ideal with grilled meats and wild game.
