La Spinetta Rivetti Barbaresco Vursu Vigneto Starderi 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

The Barbera d'Asti Ca' di Pian is a very upfront wine which currently shows a very balanced use of barrique. Ten months ageing succeeds in smoothing out any harsh acidity with the vanilla sweetness of new wood, without compromising the rich, red fruit. This is excellent served with roasted red and white meats, and strong cheeses. Specific pairs might include: penne with stir-fried beef and red bell pepper, provencal lamb with Mediterranean vegetables, pistachio-crusted pork with plum sauce and fried leeks or spiced venison steaks with red-cabbage confit and red-wine sauce.

The Story: The Rivetti family story begins in the 1890s, when Giovanni Rivetti, grandfather of the three Rivetti brothers, Carlo, Bruno and Giorgio, left Piedmont for Argentina. Like many Italians of that time, he dreamed of returning rich and a powerful man, perhaps even one day able to make a great wine in his homeland. He never did, though his son, Giuseppe (nicknamed Pin) did. Pin married Lidia, bought vineyards and began to make wine. In 1977 the family took up residence at LA SPINETTA (top of the hill) in Castagnole Lanze. It was the heart of the Moscato d’Asti country, home of a rather light and simple dessert wine. But the Rivettis believed that Moscato had the potential for greatness and set out to prove it by making Moscato Bricco Quaglia and Biancospino. Eventually though the family’s vision was even grander. In 1985 LA SPINETTA made its first red wine, Barbera Cà di Pian. After this many great reds followed: In 1989 the Rivettis dedicated their red blend Pin to their father. In 1995 they started to make their first Barbaresco, Gallina. In 1996 and 1997 the Barbarescos Starderi, Barbera d'Alba Gallina and Barbaresco Valeirano follow. In 1998 premiered the Barbera d'Asti Superiore. In 2000 the family’s ambition of also making a Barolo became reality. The Rivettis acquired vineyards in Grinzane Cavour and built a state of the art cellar, Barolo Campè. Since 2003 visitors are welcomed to visit also Campè, outside the town, Grinzane Cavour. In 2001 LA SPINETTA expanded over the borders of Piedmont and acquired 65 hectares of vineyards in Tuscany, between Pisa and Volterra to make three different 100% Sangiovese wines, as Sangiovese to La Spinetta, is the true ambassador of the Tuscan terrain. Healthy dark red. Bitter cherry, violet and licorice aromas. Intense dark berry and spice flavors hint at almost jammy ripeness, but bright acidity gives the wine a juicy, penetrating quality and terrific grip. An especially saliva-inducing example of this extremely flexible food wine.

Bright ruby-red. Blackberry and cassis aromas display a liqueur-like ripeness. A rich, concentrated fruit bomb in the mouth, with concentrated flavors of black fruits, violet and licorice. Finishes long and powerful. Impressively rich for a barbera from vines less than ten years old.

Solid blackberry and chocolate character, with hints of meat. Medium-bodied, with a solid core of fruit and a fruity finish. Drink now.

Always an attractive wine, the 2004 Barbera d'Asti Ca' di Pian shows plenty of sweet dark plumy fruit with excellent concentration on the palate and a lovely underlying note of minerality that provides freshness. It is sure to provide much pleasure over the next several years. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2010.

Good deep ruby. Blackberry, violet and bitter chocolate on the nose. Wonderfully sweet, sappy and full, with superb acidity giving life to this very rich, chocolatey wine. Sexy oak complements the wine's fruit. The quality of this wine is on the upswing, as most of Rivetti's best Asti barbera now goes into this bottling. Previously the old-vines juice went into a Superiore, but now Rivetti does a separate Superiore bottling entirely from his new vineyard, Bionzo.

Mineral, flowers, ripe fruit and toasty oak aromas follow through to a full body, with soft tannins and a citrus fruit aftertaste. Drink now.

Bright ruby-red. Blackberry, violet and spices on the lively nose. Ripe and juicy, with harmonious acidity framing the dark fruit, fresh herb and mineral flavors. Not overly oaky despite the fact that it spent almost a year in one- and two-year-old barriques. Finishes with very good length and cut, and little in the way of tannins.
