Sangiovese and Colorino make up the blend. The name means "the black one" and refers not only to the deep, dark color of the wine, but also to what old-timers in Tuscany call their red wine. Brooding in color, with bing cherry that comes through on the nose and palate. Chewy, ripe, rich and beautifully balanced, it has tremendous texture and a very long finish. A superb, classic vintage for Tuscany, with tons of fruit and the perfect balance of acidity and tannic structure.
The 2007 Il Nero di Casanova (Sangiovese) is a fresh, vinous offering with a pretty core of plump red fruit, flowers, tobacco and sweet herbs. The wine offers excellent persistence and lovely overall balance. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2012.
Beautifully perfumed, with elegant floral elements leading into the luscious red fruit palate. The warm climate of southern Tuscany makes this softer than most Chiantis, with flawlessly balanced acidity and supple tannins. The finish is dry, with a slight taste of oak.
Berry, cocoa and earth aromas follow through to a medium-bodied palate, with firm tannins and a medium finish. Drink now.
The entry-level 2006 Il Nero de Casanova is a straightforward offering loaded with ripe dark fruit. This medium to full-bodied red possesses an engaging, generous personality although the tannins could use a little more polish. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2011.
