La Selvanella Chianti Classico Riserva Melini Fattorie Melini 2003
Winemaker's Notes:
Three Glasses û Highest Rating Gambero Rosso. 'Melini's crowning glory is Chianti Classico La Selvanella Reserva standard-bearer of the zone's most traditional style. The nose is complex pervasive and elegant its fruity notes mingling with very intense unusual mineral and smoky sensations. The gutsy palate displays well-balanced acidity sweet tight-knit tannins that are never woody and extraordinary length. The result is out of this world perhaps the best Selvanella ever.'

This vineyard-designate Riserva is a delicate and medium-bodied wine with aromas of wild berry, white mineral and violets. The nose is subtle and subdued but the mouthfeel is more intense thanks to the winersquo;s fresh acidity and long berry flavors.

A little tight right now, but therersquo;s some beautiful blackberry, raspberry and floral character. Medium- to full-bodied, with firm tannins and a fresh finish. Best after 2009.

Heady cherry scents introduce this mature Chianti. It feels rich in the middle, smooth and austerely tannic in the end. A clean and complex red for braised veal.

The estatersquo;s single-vineyards 2003 Chianti Classico La Selvanella Spent a whopping 30 months in French oak, something that is rarely seen these days. Dark, brooding aromas of smoke, tar, scorched earth, black cherries, leather and spices flow from this rich, large-scaled wine. The heat of the vintage has given this wine a nice plumpness to balance the tannins but the style remains decidedly imposing. Anticipated maturity: 2008ndash;2015.
