La Segreta Rosso. Planeta Merlot Italy Sicily Planeta Red 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

Planeta is now a world famous Italain producer. Planeta wines represent a journey through the whole of Sicily. The company now has 390 hectares in four different areas of Sicily. La "Cantina Grande" (Main Winery) is at "Dispensa" in Menfi also, it is the most recent and devoted entirely to the white and red La Segreta wines (based on Grecanico and Nero d'Avola grapes respectively) and to the Rose, one hundred per cent Syrah. In the La Segreta Rosso the three varietals were all harvested and vinified seperately in order to facilitate maximum complexity, Merlot and Syrah at the end of August and Nero D'Avola at the end of September. The wine is a ruby colour with purple hues. Aromas of crushed strawberries and spice are on the nose with a soft, silky palate, supple tannins and fresh acidity that is rich and concentrated showing a hint of chocolate and a long, elegant finish. A large range of dishes complement the characters of this wine, like pasta dishes, grilled meat or even fish soup.

Had a glass at Cafe Roma in SLO. Went very well with their Ossa Buco. WOuld drink again. Mild with almost no tannins. Short finish. The fruit and acidity stood up to the food dish.

Needs to be paired with food. Too mild on it's own

Aromas of pink peppercorn lead to a juicy palate of cherry and plum notes, as a stony minerality accents the vibrant finish. Nero dandrsquo;Avola, Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Franc. Drink now.

Delicious, vibrant red with bright cherry, floral and berry character and a hint of milk chocolate. Medium-bodied, with light tannins and a fresh finish. Yummy. Nero d'Avola, Merlot, and Syrah. Drink now.

Filled with bright raspberry fruit, this is a light and juicy red to pair with spicy chorizo.

Lots of plummy, chocolaty fruit on the nose. Full-bodied, with soft tannins and a flavorful finish. Delicious already. Nero d'Avola, Merlot and Syrah. Drink now.

Blackberry, prune, pencil shavings, charcoal and a rubber-like note sum up the aromas of this Nero d'Avola, Merlot and Syrah blend. The wine is penetrating and intense on all levels with ripe fruit flavors and dusty tannins in the mouth.

Very pretty, with blackberry and cherry aromas that follow through to a medium- to full-bodied palate, with fine tannins and a long finish. Silky. Drink now.
