From a mixture of sand gravel and clay soils this unheralded terroir produces wines well-above its pedigree thanks to the extraordinary efforts of proprietors Chantal and Gerard Perse. The wines are given a 4- to 5-week maceration in both stainless steel and oak and are aged sur-lie in new oak. The dark ruby/purple-colored 2003 offers up notes of smoky meats melted licorice jammy black cherries spice box earth and cedar. This plump fleshy sexy unfined unfiltered wine represents a classic blend of 60% Merlot 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Yields were 32 hectoliters per hectare and the alcohol is 13.5%. Anticipated maturity: now-2016.

Full ruby-red. Captivating aromas of black raspberry, smoked meat, mocha and licorice. Wonderfully sweet, dense and fat but with excellent vinosity and inner-mouth perfume to the flavors of berries, mocha and licorice. A compellingly tactile vintage for Monbousquet, with the substantial but sweet tannins buffered by the wine's chewy mid-palate material. This was aged in 80% new oak, compared to 60% to 65% in 2006 and 2007. Really transcends its less-than-ideal terroir in Saint Sulpice de Faleyrens.

Like many of the Chantal and Gerard Perse wines, the 2008 Monbousquet is blacker than a moonless night. Like the other wines in the Perse portfolio, it is very backward, and was obviously just coming off malolactic fermentation on the three occasions I tasted it. Loaded with concentration, and perhaps even bigger than the 2005 or even the 2000, this blend of 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon topped off at 14.5% natural alcohol. Sweet, pure notes of black cherries, roasted herbs, forest floor, and toasty oak are restrained, but intense. The winersquo;s purity, another hallmark of this vintage, gorgeous texture, and long finish with sweet tannins as well as more acids than normal, suggest it should drink beautifully young and evolve for up to a decade. This is an incredible offering from an unheralded terroir. By the way, the 1999 and 2000 are still adolescents in terms of their evolution.

From a less than noble terroir in Saint-Sulpice de Faleyrens, Gerard Perse has accomplished miraculous things at Monbousquet. Prior to his acquisition of this property in the mid-nineties, this wine tasted like watered-down Beaujolais, but Perse has turned it into one of the more stunning, modern-styled wines of Bordeaux. A blend of approximately two-thirds Merlot, one-third Cabernet Franc and 8–10% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2005 exhibits plenty of toasty oak, roasted herb, meat juice, blackberry, cherry, and spice characteristics along with a touch of incense. Full-bodied and opulent, with an atypically rigid structure, this is a remarkable achievement for such a humble terroir. It admirably reflects Gerard Perse’s obsessive commitment to excellence. Look for this 2005 to hit its stride in 7–8 years, and last for 15–20.

Shows beautiful aromas of crushed blackberry, currant and sultana. Full-bodied, with superfine tannins and a long, caressing finish. Balanced and beautiful. Best after 2012.

An elegant effort, with impressive delicacy and delineation, I do not believe it will ultimately possess the stuffing of the 2000, 1999, or 1998. Despite the vintagersquo;s heat and drought, it comes closer stylistically to the 2001. The deep ruby/purple-tinged 2003 displays aromas of sweet toasty oak, grilled meats, dried herbs, and sweet currant and plum-like fruit. Rich, concentrated, soft, and supple, it should be consumed over the next 12+ years.
