From a less than noble terroir in Saint-Sulpice de Faleyrens, Gerard Perse has accomplished miraculous things at Monbousquet. Prior to his acquisition of this property in the mid-nineties, this wine tasted like watered-down Beaujolais, but Perse has turned it into one of the more stunning, modern-styled wines of Bordeaux. A blend of approximately two-thirds Merlot, one-third Cabernet Franc and 8ndash;10% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2005 exhibits plenty of toasty oak, roasted herb, meat juice, blackberry, cherry, and spice characteristics along with a touch of incense. Full-bodied and opulent, with an atypically rigid structure, this is a remarkable achievement for such a humble terroir. It admirably reflects Gerard Persersquo;s obsessive commitment to excellence. Look for this 2005 to hit its stride in 7ndash;8 years, and last for 15ndash;20.

Full red-ruby. Expressive, vinous aromas of redcurrant, tobacco, leather and smoke. Sweet, supple and fat with fruit; dark and red berries are complemented but not overshadowed by hints of leather and smoked meat. This plump and satisfying wine has just enough acidity to maintain its shape. Finishes with sweet, surprisingly supple tannins and noteworthy persistence. Very easy to drink already but has the stuffing to give pleasure for another decade or so.

A dark, toasty style, with lush espresso, melted fig and currant paste notes that glide over ample but velvety tannins. Polished and modern, with nice depth on the finish. Best from 2013 through 2018.

60% Merlot 30% Cabernet Franc 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Thick opulent dark black with a bright red rim. New oak aroma over intriguing steamed rice and soft cherry and cassis. Very smooth on the palate with fine round tannins in the mouth. Long sweet spicy cherry vanilla and raspberry finish. This is a powerhouse with beautifully integrated tannins. Mike Supple.
