Light and elegant on the nose. Vanilla oak topped layers of leather, medicinal, minty, chalky and teriyaki dried beef elements accent a bright core of wild cherry. Smooth and rich in the mouth, this is powerful yet not that large. The berry fruit, both fresh and dried, is accented by earth and spice notes. A fine bitter cherry element drives the moderately long finish. This is brilliant, layered, structured, faceted and transparent. It’s about as good as it gets. 94pts

Blue and black fruit notes on the nose along with a complex aromas of cinnamon, balsamic reduction, black cherry and lavender. Medium bodied, showing some nice age with flavors of earthy, dusty blue and black fruit with some suggestions of red berries as well. Light hints of truffle, coffee and a savory quality. Really drinking nicely! 92 pts. 7/14/12

It doesn't get much better than this in an affordable bottle of wine (€13-€14 in Madrid), but it all depends on what you're looking for. If you're chasing new oak, gobs of fruit and concentrated power, this won't be for you. This is one of the most classic, elegant wines from Spain. It's got everything: depth, distinct flavors, classy and dusty red- and black-berry fruit that's mellowed beautifully with its years in barrel and in bottle, nice balancing acidity, and an evocative nose that suggests, well, maybe the wine knows something that you don't. If you put it in a tasting with other Riojas, I suspect it would "lose" (whether against super-oaked-modern-styled Riojas or even the same producer's Viña Ardanza, also a terrific, if different, wine). Then again, if you threw it in as a ringer with some 1er cru Nuits-St-Georges from a riper year like '99, well, that would be an interesting comparison. But why bother. This is a delicious wine that doesn't strive to impress--it does have traditional American oak, and this is just how they make it, year in, year out. Once you open this, you're just going to want to keep drinking it until the bottle is empty, as will your guests, so stock up.

The current release is the 2001 Reserva Especial, a deeply colored wine with a lovely perfume of cinnamon, lavender, incense, balsamic, and black cherry. Medium-bodied, velvety-textured, and already complex, it will continue to evolve for another 5andndash;10 years and offer a drinking window extending from 2016 to 2036. For those seeking immediate gratification, it has the virtue of being approachable now.

Deep red. Sexy, intensely perfumed bouquet of ripe raspberry and cherry with suggestions of potpourri, sandalwood and vanilla. Shows more power and darker fruits on the palate, picking up a touch of singed plum that adds a serious quality to the sweet black raspberry and cherry flavors without costing the wine any of its vibrancy. The long, sweet finish hangs on with very good tenacity.

Rioja, SpainLa Rioja Alta Vina Ardanza Reserva Especial is a gorgeous Spanish red wine gem for the ages from one of the top producers in the renowned Rioja wine region. With more than 50,000 casks and 6.4 million bottles stored at any one time, La Rioja Alta S.A. is unique in its ability to supply large quantities of fully mature wines of world class quality. The Bodega was formed in 1890 as a partnership of 5 quality-conscious growers keen to exploit the export potential for well-made 'modern' Rioja. La Rioja Alta has never let standards slip, and continues to this day the tradition of careful long-aging that gives Rioja its unique character. These wines offer a wonderfully complex bouquet, rich flavors, a seductively smooth texture, and are all ready to drink on release. This wine received a 94-point rating from Jay Miller for Robert Parker's Wine Advocate and a 92-point score from Stephen Tanzer. It is built to age gracefully till at least 2036-for those who can wait! La Rioja Alta Vina Ardanza Reserva Especial is a blend of 80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha. It is a brilliant cherry red in color with a gorgeous, complex bouquet. Wild berry aromas predominate, blended with hints of coconut, cinnamon, tobacco and leather. The wine is full-bodied and well structured, with silky and enveloping tannins. Aged for 36 months in 4-year-old American oak barriques, it is well balanced to enjoy now and over the next 25 years. It is long and rich on the finish.Enjoy La Rioja Alta Vina Ardanza Reserva Especial with roast pork, lamb, grilled steak, paella, and aged cheeses.

The Vi¤a Alberdi is made of mostly Tempranillo grapes, with a hint of Mazuelo. Very traditional in style, this wine exhibits roasted coffee bean, plum, and leather on the nose, always remaining delicate on the palate.

Kirschrot mit starken Goldreflexen. Kräftiges, komplexes Aroma, stark und ausgeprägt. Im Mund erweist er sich als schöner, fertiger Wein, lebendig und vollkommen, mit viel Zukunft.

Long after-taste acquired from its lengthy time in bottle, where its elegant bouquet gains in intensity. This Viña Ardanza continues to evolve without losing its traditional qualities.
