Editorial Reviews for La Rioja Alta Tempranillo Blend Rioja Viña Ardanza Reserva Especial
Light and elegant on the nose. Vanilla oak topped layers of leather, medicinal, minty, chalky and teriyaki dried beef elements accent a bright core of wild cherry. Smooth and rich in the mouth, this is powerful yet not that large. The berry fruit, both fresh and dried, is accented by earth and spice notes. A fine bitter cherry element drives the moderately long finish. This is brilliant, layered, structured, faceted and transparent. It’s about as good as it gets. 94pts
Blue and black fruit notes on the nose along with a complex aromas of cinnamon, balsamic reduction, black cherry and lavender. Medium bodied, showing some nice age with flavors of earthy, dusty blue and black fruit with some suggestions of red berries as well. Light hints of truffle, coffee and a savory quality. Really drinking nicely! 92 pts. 7/14/12
Disappointing. Closed nose, woody when it began to open. On the palate, the fruit was severly masked by the oak and herb flavors.
Really good wine for the price.
It doesn't get much better than this in an affordable bottle of wine (€13-€14 in Madrid), but it all depends on what you're looking for. If you're chasing new oak, gobs of fruit and concentrated power, this won't be for you. This is one of the most classic, elegant wines from Spain. It's got everything: depth, distinct flavors, classy and dusty red- and black-berry fruit that's mellowed beautifully with its years in barrel and in bottle, nice balancing acidity, and an evocative nose that suggests, well, maybe the wine knows something that you don't. If you put it in a tasting with other Riojas, I suspect it would "lose" (whether against super-oaked-modern-styled Riojas or even the same producer's Viña Ardanza, also a terrific, if different, wine). Then again, if you threw it in as a ringer with some 1er cru Nuits-St-Georges from a riper year like '99, well, that would be an interesting comparison. But why bother. This is a delicious wine that doesn't strive to impress--it does have traditional American oak, and this is just how they make it, year in, year out. Once you open this, you're just going to want to keep drinking it until the bottle is empty, as will your guests, so stock up.

The current release is the 2001 Reserva Especial, a deeply colored wine with a lovely perfume of cinnamon, lavender, incense, balsamic, and black cherry. Medium-bodied, velvety-textured, and already complex, it will continue to evolve for another 5ndash;10 years and offer a drinking window extending from 2016 to 2036. For those seeking immediate gratification, it has the virtue of being approachable now.
Dunkles, intensives Kirschrot.

The Vi¤a Alberdi is made of mostly Tempranillo grapes, with a hint of Mazuelo. Very traditional in style, this wine exhibits roasted coffee bean, plum, and leather on the nose, always remaining delicate on the palate.
Deep red. Sexy, intensely perfumed bouquet of ripe raspberry and cherry with suggestions of potpourri, sandalwood and vanilla. Shows more power and darker fruits on the palate, picking up a touch of singed plum that adds a serious quality to the sweet black raspberry and cherry flavors without costing the wine any of its vibrancy. The long, sweet finish hangs on with very good tenacity.
