La Rioja Alta Rioja Vina Ardanza Reserva 2006
A bit tight on the nose with subtle notions of spicy wild berry fruits and dusty, dry leather. A little lactic, this shows some raw wood qualities on the nose, as well. The wine is almost velvety on entry and is totally integrated if a bit tight, with some early blueberry fruit and layered wood spice accents. There has lovely purity to the fruit that leads to the finish, showing off nuttiness, juicy plum fruit and delicate shavings of cinnamon. This remains a little tight but it is already delicious and oh so drinkable. 91ptsAdd winemaker's notes

This took it's sweet time to open up, even from a high shoulder fill bottle. At first there was only VA and the nose was very attenuated but with time and air it gained a fine leather note and nuances of rosewood, tobacco/ pipe smoke, sour game and a great floral top note. In the mouth this is very acid driven but the red currant fruit and sour cherry fruit is zesty and fresh with competing notes of bitterness and sourness that recall pithy lime zest. Turning silky in the mouth with a gamy, savory edge emerging that leads to a moderately long finish. Great mature Rioja. 93pts

Deep ruby. Sexy, highly perfumed aromas of red fruit preserves, vanilla, mocha and fresh flowers, with a hint of pipe tobacco coming up with air. Sappy and broad on entry, then more taut in the middle, with sweet cherry-vanilla and spicecake flavors given lift by juicy acidity. Closes smooth, spicy and long, with lingering smokiness and fine-grained tannins adding grip. A touch more lively than the excellent 2004 version of this wine and of equal quality, which makes it an outstanding value in old-school Rioja.
This traditional red offers dried cherry, orange peel, tobacco and sanguine flavors in a silky texture, supported by light, firm tannins and balsamic acidity. Focused and fresh, with a juicy finish. Drink now.
A firm, old-fashioned style of Rioja, this wine bristles with tannins, the fruit taking time to emerge. That fruit is tangy and persistent, handling all of its tempranillo volatility with grace. Pour it with anything from jamón Ibérico to thinly sliced roast pork.
Cropped from a vintage deemed almost perfect, the 2005 Viña Ardanza Reserva follows the same varietal mix found in the last vintages; 80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha. The grapes are always sourced from the same vineyards, 30-year-old Tempranillo from Fuenmayor and Cenicero in Rioja Alta and Garnacha from Tudelilla in Rioja Baja. In the case of the 2005, it was racked six times during its elevage. The one bottle I tasted first was a bit evolved with plenty of cigar ash, incense and leather along with hung game (woodcock came to mind). But the palate was drying out a bit. Another bottle showed much fresher, with a great classical Rioja profile. This is very affordable making it a superb value for what it delivers. 600,000 bottles were produced of the prodigious 2005 vintage. This wine is not produced in 2002, 2003, 2006, 2011 or 2013.
Cedar, tobacco and spice hints frame dried cherry, berry and vanilla notes in this silky red. The flavors mingle nicely, framed by juicy acidity and light but firm tannins. The wine has a lovely, weightless intensity. A fine example of the traditional style. Drink now through 2020.

The 2004 Vina Ardanza is a blend of 80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha from 30-year-old vines in Fuenmayor and Cenicero. It is aged for 36 months in four-year-old American oak. It has a very enticing bouquet with dark cherry, Christmas cake, dried fig and espresso with fine delineation and bags of exuberance. The palate is medium-bodied with taut tannins, underpinned by a keen citric thread that cuts through the licorice-tinged, dark berry and allspice-tinged fruit with style.
