Deep leather, white flower, subtle orange peel and sour red cherries greet the nose with hints of tobacco, ash, vanilla, dill and spicy wood making for a beautiful perfume. There’s a hint of early wood sweetness here, yet this is soft and elegant in the mouth. The red fruits are accented by bright acidity and lovely polished tannins. A deep wild cherry fruit element on the back end turns into red cherry candy with vanilla and spice on the finish, where hints of austere tannins remain fully covered by the rich fruit. Light and elegant on the nose. Vanilla oak topped layers of leather, medicinal, minty, chalky and teriyaki dried beef elements accent a bright core of wild cherry. Smooth and rich in the mouth, this is powerful yet not that large. The berry fruit, both fresh and dried, is accented by earth and spice notes. A fine bitter cherry element drives the moderately long finish. This is brilliant, layered, structured, faceted and transparent. It’s about as good as it gets. 94pts
Do not walk run away from this, it is some of the worst Spanish wine I have ever had and is a incredibly horrible value.

Great Rioja. Very oaky and smooth. Can drink this the whole day.
Blue and black fruit notes on the nose along with a complex aromas of cinnamon, balsamic reduction, black cherry and lavender. Medium bodied, showing some nice age with flavors of earthy, dusty blue and black fruit with some suggestions of red berries as well. Light hints of truffle, coffee and a savory quality. Let’s start with the noteworthy 2007 Vina Alberdi, their youngest and fruiter wine from a cold vintage. It’s produced with Tempranillo grapes from their own vineyards in the villages of Rodezno and Labastida, fermented with their natural yeast and aged in American oak barrels produced by their own coopers, the first year in new ones and then transferred to third-use ones. It was bottled in March 2010. The wine has a translucent ruby color with an orange rind and an impressive bouquet of dried flowers, caramelized orange and cloves. The palate reveals a medium-bodied, elegant and balanced wine, keeping the power of the fruit and the subtleness of the aging, which is easy to drink and true to its origin. This wine represents a very good value for traditional Rioja. 500,000 bottles produced. Drink 2014–2018.
Vivid ruby-red. Smoky red fruits and fresh rose on the perfumed nose, with vanilla and licorice nuances adding depth. Smooth and seamless, offering sweet raspberry and cherry flavors and a touch of candied flowers. A hint of pipe tobacco comes up on the finish, which shows excellent clarity, supple tannins and lingering spiciness. Fully mature but I’d be in no rush to drink this classic old-school Rioja.
Cherry red with a pinkish rim, high to medium robe. Intense aroma, predominant ripe red berries with balsamic scents, coffee, vanilla and coconut notes. Well-balanced on the palate with a silky mouthfeel, pleasant acidity.
Ruby-red. Cherry, vanilla, tobacco and anise on the perfumed nose. Juicy and focused on entry, then fleshier in the mid-palate, offering vibrant dark berry and bitter cherry flavors and a touch of mocha. Finishes on a tangy note, with gentle tannins and very good energy and cut. I’d give this wine a few more years to flesh out.
The 2006 Vina Aberdi Reserva was the only wine released by La Rioja Alta because of the challenging growing season. It has a sensual but simple bouquet of blueberry and cassis interlaced with vanilla. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and an alluring, sensual chocolate and coconut-tinged finish that has “consumer friendly” written all over it. This is irresistible. Drink now–2018.
Bright ruby. Sexy, oak-spiced red fruit and floral pastille aromas are complemented by deeper-pitched notes of espresso and licorice. Juicy, penetrating and spicy on the palate, offering vibrant raspberry and bitter cherry flavors and a building vanilla nuance. Supple tannins give shape to the finish, which features lively red fruit and spicecake flavors. This suave wine is delicious now but balanced to age.
The 2005 Vina Arana Reserva has a fresh bouquet of orange blossom, quince, violets and dark cherries. The palate is succulent on the entry with vivacious maraschino cherry, red currant and blood orange. It displays a very fine build and a silky smooth texture that segues to a poised, mint-tinged, bright and animated finish. Drink now–2020.
