La Reserve des Pontifes Michel Bernard Hermitage 1994

Member Review by duncan 906:

I bought this bottle of wine for £16 from the website www.bidforwine.co.uk/auctions/show/123738.Hermitage is an appellation created in 1937,although viticulture here goes back centuries, for red and white wines from the slopes of the hill by the town of Tain on the east bank of the Rhone river about 40 miles south of Lyon.It is a very prestigious appellation having once been favoured by Louis XIV and the Russian tsars and takes its name from a chapel or Hermitage at the top of the hill built in 1224 by a crusader knight called Caspar de Sterimberg. My bottle is 100% syrah and I started it last night with my chicken stew. There is some blackcurrant, blueberry and plummstyle fruit with a hint of pepper or spice on the finish and soft and smooth tannins that provided ample structure. In short this was a nice wine that went well with the stew.
