La Plazuela 2002

External Review by Premium Wine & Spirits:

Made from Grenache and the indigenous Cencibel grape, this spectacularly rich, concentrated Spanish red was aged one year in both French and American oak barrels. An impressive effort, it boasts a dense ruby/purple color in addition to a complex bouquet of smoke, cedar wood, blackberries, black currants, high quality toast, and spice box. It possesses a Bordeaux-like elegance and complexity, but the generosity and texture of a southern Rhone. Stunningly pure, rich, and broad in the mouth, but not heavy, this superb offering should be enjoyed over the next 7–8 years.

Ruby-red. Bright redcurrant and cherry on the nose, with a sexy gingerbread quality adding complexity. Firm, spicy cherry and cassis flavors are slow to open, with dusty tannins adding solidity. Air brings up sweeter blackberry and mocha, which carry through a firm, focused finish. Give this some time.

Ruby-red. Aromas of spicecake, leather, dark chocolate and flowers. Sweet and spicy in the mouth, with excellent ripeness for 2002. Flavors of red berries, leather and game. Finishes with sweet, dusty tannins and very good length.
