La Nerthe Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee des Cadettes 2003

Winemaker's Notes:

This luxury white cuvée, Clos de Beauvenir (60% Roussanne and 40 % Clairette) is named after the original name of the estate in the 16th Century. Selected from the finest parcels of old vines, this wine is truly an elixer in a class by itself. A gloriously perfumed, honeyed wine possessing full body, terrific acidity, tremendous delineation, and a layered texture.

Extremely smooth. Not big, bold or fruity. Mildly complex, elegant, medium weight. Excellent.

Great wine if your looking for smooth mid-dry taste combined with good value; I´ve tasted the wine in Paris while eating foie gras and it worked fine.

Nose is a bit hot when the bottle is first opened, firm tannins balanced with good fruit.

Dark red. Spicy, jammy aromas of blackberry, cassis and exotic Asian spices. Round and velvety, with sweet berry flavors and notes of chocolate, mocha and lavender pastille. A solid Chateauneuf-Du-Pape at a good value.

Wine Advocate ReviewThe luxury cuvee, the Cuvee des Cadettes, is the only Chateauneuf du Pape completely aged in 100% new oak, a la many Bordeaux and Burgundies. The 2003 is an outstanding wine but somewhat of a letdown after what I tasted from cask. A blend of 47% Grenache, 36% Syrah, and the rest Mourvedre, the wine has a deep purple color, a sweet nose of graphite, toasty new oak, cassis, and black fruits. In the mouth, it is medium to full-bodied, revealing more rugged tannin than it did last year as well as aggressive new oak. Nevertheless, there is impressive concentration, but the 2003 is not up to the level of the brilliant 2001 or 1998, the two finest Cuvees des Cadettes I have tasted. In short, it seems to have tightened up and taken on a far more tannic personality than it had last year. Anticipated maturity: now-2014.

My estimated evaluation of the 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape is based on tasting through all four of the separate cuvees, which had not yet been blended. All four revealed high levels of quality. The Syrah component was ripe and rich, but perhaps not as d... Robert Parkers Wine Advocate. A Proprietary Blend wine from Rhone in France. 2003 Chateau de la Nerthe Chateauneuf du Pape 750ml
