La Magia Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2001

Member Review by Ruski:

Enjoyed this La Magia 2001 on 1 March, 2014. It has been in my cellar since Nov 2009 so 4+ years.Bought for EUR 50 on a wine cruise with Silja Line. The wine opened up in the glass nicely after some 30 min. Still very dark ruby in color, slightly thin on edges. Blackberries, red currant, cherry and hints of licorice and vanilla. Full bodied, but smooth with now soft, but still tangible tannins. The finish goes on and on, vau. This is a great Brunello from an exceptional year. Perfect to drink now.

It is not only situated in one of the best agricultured zones for a vineyard, but is also positioned among one of the most beautiful panoramic sight in Montalcino. The winery is run by Schwarz family who come from the Alto Adige (South Tyrol) region. The Schwarz family prefer a more natural approach in the vineyard, using as few chemicals as possible, while for fermentation and vinification they use the modern technologies. The winery consists of 52 hectars land of which 16 hectare are the vineyard of the Brunello vines. The products are 40.000 bottles of "Brunello di Montalcino", 30.000 bottles of "Rosso di Montalcino", a small quantity of a "Rosato" and Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Read less

Whilst a exceptional wine, La Magia did not declare a riserva vintage in 1997, its riserva vinatage was 1995. Due to the fact that for a wine to be declared Riserva in Montalcino it has to age in oak for 5yrs; this meant that the 1995 was still on oak when the "showstopping" 1997 vintage was released (after 18 months in oak) i.e prior to the 1995 riserva. 1997 is pretty much concidered the best vintage of the last 50+ years, and as such would have been declared a riverva vintage had the 1995 not still been in the barrel. ... I stand to be corrected on this, but I have never come across the 1997 riserva, and I have both the 1995 riserva and 1997 in my cellar

2001 was a historic vintage for Brunello, the best since 1985. The Wine Advocate gives it 95 points while the Wine Spectator rates it whopping 98! Very few of these majestic wines are still available and fewer still of the much rarer Riserva bottlings, so we're very excited to have acquired a tiny quantity of this '01 Riserva from Fattoria La Magia, crafted by celebrated winemaker Roberto Cipresso. Silk-laden and succulent, it shows the power and expression of this great vintage and it still has more to reveal in the coming years. Wine Spectator called it "Racy and harmonious" Only 400 cases were porduced of this rare gem. Grab it now while it lasts. not sponsored by or affiliated with The Wine Spectator, The Wine Advocate or the International Wine Cellar.
