Whilst a exceptional wine, La Magia did not declare a riserva vintage in 1997, its riserva vinatage was 1995.
Due to the fact that for a wine to be declared Riserva in Montalcino it has to age in oak for 5yrs; this meant that the 1995 was still on oak when the "showstopping" 1997 vintage was released (after 18 months in oak) i.e prior to the 1995 riserva.
1997 is pretty much concidered the best vintage of the last 50+ years, and as such would have been declared a riverva vintage had the 1995 not still been in the barrel.
