What to Expect

Rhone Blends are generally based on Grenache, though some blends may be predominantly Syrah or Mourvedre. The fact that these wines are blends gives the winemakers unusual flexibility in creating a finished wine. In the Southern Rhone Valley of France the styles can range from light, fruity, soft Cotes du Rhone to big, bold, age worthy Chateaunuef-du-pape. This blend is also very popular in Australia and the United States where they frequently go by the Moniker GSM (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre) and exhibit the rich, bold fruit that both countries are famous for.

Winemakers Notes

"Wine Advocate #156 (Dec 2004) Rating: 87 points Drink 2004-2008 Produced from 50-60 year old vines, the 2003 Cotes du Rhone (50% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 30% Carignan) reveals more dry tannin than its siblings along with big, sweet and sour cherry notes intermixed with hints of strawberries, leather, meat, and earth. Drink this muscular Cotes du Rhone over the next 3-4 years."" """

Reviews

Wine Skinny

Concentrated and intense (not exactly light!) but fantastic with summer grilling. Focused plum and blackberry fruit flavors are laced with dark chocolate, orange zest and toasty oak. Very good. Ready to drink now and over the next three or four years.
