La Follette Pinot Noir Manchester Ridge Vineyard United States 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

La Follette Wines is a partnership between winemaker Greg La Follette of Tandem and Pete and Terri Kight of Quivira Vineyards & Winery in Dry Creek Valley. This Sonoma County winery crafts wines that offer benchmark expression of vineyard site and appellation. The focus is on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from cool climate vineyards in Sonoma (DuNah, van der Kamp and Sangiacomo) and Mendocino (Manchester Ridge). After studying ancient Burgundian techniques at UC Davis, Greg La Follette has had a remarkable winemaking career. His unparalleled understanding of yeast - specifically, how different yeasts affect the mouth feel and flavors of the finished wine - is a defining aspect of his winemaking talent. It was at Davis that he became fascinated with the scientific components of mouth feel. Greg worked at Beaulieu Vineyard as research viticulturist/enologist with wine master, Andre Tchelistcheff. From BV, he went to work at Kendall-Jackson and later turned his talents to Flowers Vineyard & Winery where he was the winemaker and general manager, launching one of the most successful small Pinot labels to date. In 2001 he founded Tandem Wines to produce small lot Russian River Valley Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. He has also consulted on vineyard and winery projects around the world, including the new UC Davis teaching winery. The label illustration was found in a rare first edition French manual on viticulture published in 1847. The tool in the winegrower's hand was changed into a more whimsical magic wand to communicate the mystical, almost alchemic relationship between winemaker and the vines.

La Follette is a small Sonoma County winery focused on crafting small-lot Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays from some of the finest vineyards in the Sonoma Coast, Sonoma Mountain and Mendocino Ridge appellations. Launched in 2010, La Follette is a new winery from esteemed California winemaker Greg La Follette in partnership with owners Pete and Terri Kight. Uniquely gifted as both a winemaker and viticulturist, Greg La Follette is one of the country’s leading authorities on Pinot Noir. Frequently espousing age-old Burgundian practices not commonly used in this country, Greg has built his career crafting rich and elegant wines that speak of a distinct sense of place. Greg studied at UC Davis, gained valuable training at Beaulieu Vineyard as a research viticulturalist/enologist under wine master André Tchelistcheff, consulted at Kendall-Jackson where he provided guidance on the improvements in vine and wine quality and launched Flower’s successful Pinot Noir program as winemaker and general manager. Today, turning his focus to La Follette, Greg is able to practice his unique style of “on the edge” winemaking – taking risks he believes are necessary to make truly extraordinary wine. Read less

Tasting Notes:

Huckleberry, hibiscus tea and dried cherry on the nose evolve to deeper notes of forest floor and charcuterie. Tannins are smooth and sweet on the palate, with acidity, savory and hickory building to the finish of equal parts fruit, earth and wood. An opulent Pinot with luxuriant mouthfeel and weight.
