What to Expect

California has long struggled with Pinot Noir. Finding the right vineyards for this most fickle of grape, one that enjoys a cool growing season yet needs warmth close to harvest to fully ripen, has proven a challenge in such a sunny state. Cooler areas eventually became identified; the Santa Rita Hills, Russian River Valley and Mendocino's Anderson valley are all prime spots for Pinot Noir in California. Unlike the lighter colored and sometimes delicate Pinots of Burgundy, California produces many rich, deep Pinots full of slightly chewy dark berry and cherry fruits with hints of cola, Asian spices and forest floor frequently adding complexity.

Winemakers Notes

"The 2006 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir opens with engaging aromas of ripe, round cherry, floral notes, spicy clove and licorice. Cherry continues in the mouth, melding with rich plum, orange peel and tea leaves over a mouth-watering jamminess. Balanced acidity and firm tannins round out a long, lingering finish." - Melissa Stackhouse, La Crema Winemaker

Wine Tasting NotesExotic aromas of black cherry, blackberry with hints of cola, black licorice and subtle dried herbs. The flavors are focused on lush dark fruit which provides an enticing plush texture. Broad tannins mixed with a lingering fruit core round out the finish.

Good Pinot but you can enjoy same level of taste/flavor with Estancia 2006 Pinot Noir Monterey and this is half price compared to La Crema Pinot Noir.

WA 90pts. - According to the Wine Advocate: The earthier 2006 Pinot Noir Russian River displays scents of clove, allspice, licorice, and dark cherries. This is a meaty, earthy example of well-made Pinot. Drink it over the next 3-5 years. Winemaker Notes - Aromas of ripe cherry, cocoa, anise and rich baking spices. Plush flavors of cherry, plum and pomegranate meld with hints of delicate tea leaf. Structured, balanced acidity and elegant, firm tannins round out the mouth.

Decent Pinot at a good price. Not overly complex- pretty straight forward in terms of fruit and finish. $21.99 is on the high end- should be able to find it under $20.
