La Crema 'Sonoma' Chardonnay 2011

Winemaker's Notes:

Perhaps our most popular release overall, the Sonoma Coast Chardonnay opens with an intriguing interplay of lively citrus and subtle toasted oak, laced with just a kiss of butterscotch. The palate is round and nutty, with flavors of yellow apple and orange adding lushness, while well-balanced acidity creates a lovely vibrancy.

Tight on the nose with notes of graham crackers and fresh cream over green apple peels and growing spicy wood tones. Tight and slightly minerally on entry, this shows good tension in the mouth with a nice hint of caramel early on the palate, followed by sweet pear and apple fruit all fading into a smooth, gentle, spicy finish. Easy to drink and restrained but not particularly complex or deep. 87pts

Strong green apple flavor with less creamy/buttery finish than I remember from other vintages. Enjoyed with mahi mahi and zucchini. Maybe better with a chicken dish.

In my opinion, the Monterrey blows the Sonoma out of the water. Complex and ripe with tropical fruit and a luscious mouthfeel.

Green-tinged gold. Lively citrus zest and quince aromas are complemented by suggestions of white flowers and chalky minerals. Racy precise and nicely concentrated offering zesty lemon and orange flavors and bright mineral lift. Finishes on a subtle note of iodine with very good clarity and cut. This wine delivers fantastic value. Stephen Tanzers IWC.

La Crema Winery has been producing outstanding Chardonnay from the cool Sonoma coast area since 1979. Grapes for this release were selected from cool vineyard sites within the Sonoma Coast boundaries. A variety of clones were selected to achieve rich layers and complex, intense aromatics in the glass, including Clone 4, Dijon, Robert Young, 809, Rued and Wente. To avoid damage to the clusters, fruit was picked in the coolest parts of the day and delivered to the winery in small, half-ton bins. The fruit was carefully sorted before pressing; hand-picked lots were immediately whole cluster pressed. After all the fruit was pressed and settled overnight, the juice was racked. 95% was then barrel fermented in French oak for while 5% was fermented in stainless steel. Full malolactic fermentation is done for a round rich character. The lees were stirred every three to four weeks for 6 months adding layers of spice, texture and vanilla. Interbational Wine Cellar scored this 90 points saying "Bright gold. Spicy citrus and orchard fruit aromas are complemented by notes of ginger and honeysuckle. Shows very good focus and tension on the palate, offering lively pear and tangerine flavors and a touch of anise. Finishes bright and energetic, leaving a refreshingly bitter citrus zest note behind. Quite grown-up in style for a large production wine."

Complex, if on a modest scale, with pleasing notes of spice, creamy oak and green tree fruits. Drink now.

Tasting Notes:

The fruit was harvested in the early morning hours to ensure the clusters arrived cold to the winery. Grapes were pressed to tank, and allowed to settle 24 hours before being barreled down for 100% barrel fermentation in 86% French oak (20% new). 100% of the blend underwent secondary malolactic fermentation in barrel. The wine was stirred every three weeks as it aged 6 months on the lees.
