La Crema Russian River Valley Chardonnay 2012

Winemaker's Notes:

This wine is a true regional blend sourced from vineyards throughout the Russian River Valley. To achieve layers of complexity from entry to finish from this excellent vintage, we sourced from a variety of sites, centering on a clonal selection of Clone 76, 4 and 96. Fruit was handpicked in the early morning hours. To capture vivid fruit flavors, a gentle whole cluster press removed juice from skins and seeds. The juice was allowed to settle overnight before racking into primarily[we usually say 100% here – no % on tech sheet] French oak barrels (29% new), where primary and malolactic fermentation (100%) took place to fully marry the vibrant Russian River Valley fruit character with smooth oak components. The wine rested an additional 8 ½ months in barrel, with the lees stirred once every three weeks to accentuate a rich creaminess to the mouth. The wine was racked just once before bottling.

Tight on the nose with a decidedly leesy, floral aroma but then this is rather relaxed in the mouth, broad yet focused and transparent with lots of lovely precise crisp apple, pear and apricot fruits. Turning rather crisp and mineral on the backend, this ends with a super clean finish that highlights layers of apple and citrus flavors followed by a hint of wood spice on the finale. 90pts

Fresh and a bit tart on the nose with green apple, baked apple and spicy wood aromas. This enters the mouth with racy acids that keep a palate full of sweet toasty oak spice, baked apple, ripe kiwi and lime curd flavors quite lively. Offering a nice combination of bright open knit textures and moderately rich flavors, this stumbles a bit on the modest finish which shows floral leesy character and a nice pop of minerality on the final. 89pts

This was part of a Sonoma County trip to Healdsburg/Russian River for some wine tasting fun! In comparison to the Carneros Hills Chardonnay, this was again overly oaky for me but there was more fruit with good minerality and was crispier with a little more acid than the last one. Odd but this seem to have a creamier finish than the last. The taste lingers. For more please visit http://dionyshius.blogspot.com/2012/07/russian-river-healdsburg.html

2007 La Crema Russian River Chardonnay was just released. As usual, this is a great value wine but found the 07 a little restrained compared to the 06. Probably needs a little more time. C: light golden in colour A: butterscotch, vanilla and pineapple T: Rich, light acidty, caramel, long finish

Very nice chardonnay. Nice rich, buttery, not too oaky. I did not find the Russian RIver to be any much more special that the two other Le Crema Chards (which cost $7 - $10 less).

This wine is a true regional blend sourced from vineyards throughout the Russian River Valley. Given the overall cool conditions of this vintage, 2011 was the year for the relatively warmer vineyards near Chalk Hill to shine. They provided the rich, lush elements of baked pear and yellow apple which were balanced by the bright citrus and juicy acidity of the Santa Rosa bench vineyards. A variety of clones including Rued, 4 and Dijon added further complexity to the blend.Fruit was handpicked in the early morning hours. Nectarine, apple, pineapple, and citrus meld into a wonderful combination of fruit, which is balanced by hazelnut, ginger and subtle butterscotch. Intense pear, nectarine, and passion fruit lead creamy layers into the finish.

"An excellent example of Russian River Valley Chardonnay, this vintage opens with layered aromas of sweet spice, white floral notes and rich yellow apple tones. A juicy acidity adds depth and focus to the rich, creamy palate. Flavors of poached pear and lemon drop give way to lingering notes of crème brûlée and freshly ground nutmeg on a rich, elegant finish." - Elizabeth Grant-Douglas, Winemaker The Stats:Appellation: Russian River ValleyComposition: 100% ChardonnayClonal Selection: Dijon, Rued, Clone 4Type of Oak: 100% French, 32% new barrels, medium and medium+ toast levelsTime in Barrel: 8½ monthsAlcohol: 14.2%T.A.: 0.56g / 100mLpH: 3.48R.S.: 0.08%Cases Produced: 5000 ** SOLD OUT **

Rating: 93/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the October 2010 issue. Here is a deep, decidedly complex look at the grape that begs for a bit of patience insofar as, while very rich and leading with plenty appley fruit and creamy oak, it seems a wine of hidden talent and reveals a bit more with each successive sniff and sip. Fairly full on the palate, slightly oily in feel yet never heavy and always well-balanced, it is light on its feet without being a light wine, and it should prove first-rate partner to the likes of seared scallops or sole in buerre blanc.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Drinkable now. Unlikely to improve with further aging.

The 2006 Chardonnay Russian River is a beauty. Tropical fruit notes of pineapple and a hint of white peach in a restrained yet powerful style are followed by a palate that has gorgeous precision, purity, and ripeness. It is elegant, subtle, yet substantial. Drink it over the next 1-2 years.

There are 6,200 cases of the 2007 Chardonnay Russian River. It exhibits plenty of tropical fruit and honeysuckle along with a touch of spice, full-bodied, rich flavors, and a subtle note of oak. This wine was 100% barrel-fermented and was put through 100% malolactic fermentation, but the oak is kept in the background. This Chardonnay / Pinot Noir specialist should receive rave notices from bargain hunters looking for a top-flight Chardonnay that is complex, rich, and widely available.

    Tasting Notes:

"This exceptional vintage gave us classic Russian River Chardonnay character, with fresh aromas of yellow apple and stone fruits highlighted by baking spice and vanilla tones. On the palate, flavors of ripe pear and honeydew melon are accented by toffee and hazelnut notes. The rich mouthfeel is beautifully balanced by juicy acidity and great concentration, giving a lush impression on a lingering finish."
