La Crema 'Monterey' Pinot Noir 2016

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Lightly briary blackberry fruits greet the nose along with hints of flowers, blueberries and some cigar wrapper tobacco. This is a plump little wine with earthy and bacon fat-framed flavors of raspberry and plum on the palate. The tannins are fine grained and offer gentle support to the fruit, which turns earthier and a little spicy on the back end before finishing with a wash of plum skin and charcoal. Shows a little heat on the finish. 87pts

The wine is a lighter color in the glass, quite typical of pinot noir. The nose is classic pinot, tart fruit notes, cherry and blackberry, and a hint of leather and tar. The taste is warm and pleasant, makes me feel like I'm enjoying a nice summer evening on the patio. Very nice fruit, blueberry and strawberry notes with some nice minerality midpalate. The finish is quite nice with some tartness but very smooth and dry, very creamy and quite reminiscent of many Oregon pinots. A balanced style, with a mix of ripe berry, plum and light creamy oak. The tannins are laced with crushed rock and cedar details. Drink now through 2020.

Bright red. Spicy red berries and rose on the nose, with a hint of smokiness in the background. Offers tangy strawberry and redcurrant flavors and a hint of cola, with a white pepper nuance adding bite. Finishes lively and focused, leaving behind sweet red fruit liqueur and orange peel notes behind. I like the blend of succulence and tanginess here.

A lighter, more accessible version of their famed Sonoma Pinot. I think the Monterey is an amazing value. Bright summer berry and light licorice and cinnamon notes.

Bright ruby. Black raspberry, cherry and rooty sassafras scents, with a hint of smokiness. Fleshy and smooth in texture, offering spicy red and dark berry flavors and a note of candied flowers. Picks up spiciness with air and finishes on a smoky dark berry note, with good thrust and length.

The 2009 vintage of La Crema's Monterey Pinot Noir was a hit, and the 2010 is as good if not better. Aromas of macerated plum, tri-state strawberries, cigar, clove and black tea. Juicy and ripe, with proper acidity and a pleasant mouth-feel.

Winemaker's Notes: In the glass, aromas of fresh strawberry and plum are immediately apparent, punctuated by hints of earth and sweet tobacco. The palate echoes the nose, with layered flavors of strawberry and plum joined by cocoa powder and espresso bean. A subtle earthiness leads to a fleshy mid-palate and a smooth, mineral-laced finish.
