La Crema Monterey Pinot Gris 2012

Winemaker's Notes:

Fruit was gently hand-harvested at night and during the coolest part of the morning at 23-25° Brix. At the winery, the fruit was gently pressed and fermented cold in 100% stainless steel to capture the vibrant fresh fruit character. Press fractions were separated to keep the light press juice from the more intense harder press lots. The lots were fermented separately to full dryness, taking nearly a month to complete fermentation. Just after primary fermentation, the wine was sulfured for stability and racked to prevent malolactic fermentation, once again preserving the fresh fruit quality of the wine

Quite pungent on the nose with a layering of herb stem, citrus pith and yeasty floral notes over a base of melon and pear fruit tinged with a hint of almond. Round and creamy up front, and delivering plenty of soft, fresh pear and apple flavors with supportive acidity popping out on the moderately long finish adding a nice refreshing note to the finale. An interesting wine that starts out rather plush and creamy and ends more tense and edgy. 88pts

Bright and balanced, this wine opens with aromas of fresh white peach, Meyer lemon and subtle oral hints. The lush palate is layered with flavors of ripe pear, baking spice and exotic tropical notes. Mineral undertones are evident in the lengthy finish.

Tasting Notes:

From our home in the Russian River Valley, La Crema has pioneered cool-climate artisan winemaking, exploring the vineyards of California’s finest coastal growing regions where cooling coastal wind and fog allow the grapes to ripen slowly on the vine, developing complex aromas and flavors. This quest has led us north into the rugged hills of Mendocino and south along the wind-swept slopes of Los Carneros. Our Monterey wines come from the cool benchlands of this coastal appellation, where bright, fruit-filled Pinot Gris makes an exciting addition to our portfolio.
