Here is a deep, decidedly complex look at the grape that begs for a bit of patience insofar as, while very rich and leading with plenty appley fruit and creamy oak, it seems a wine of hidden talent and reveals a bit more with each successive sniff and sip. Fairly full on the palate, slightly oily in feel yet never heavy and always well-balanced, it is light on its feet without being a light wine, and it should prove first-rate partner to the likes of seared scallops or sole in buerre blanc.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Drinkable now. Unlikely to improve with further aging.


Winemaker's Notes:

Our goal with these wines is to hone in on the unique character and personality of each Russian River Valley vineyard site. This quest begins with clonal selection. All our Russian River Valley vineyards are located within 20 miles of the Pacific Ocean. In this cool, coastal climate we plant a large percentage of Dijon and Rued clones, both known for vibrancy and perfumed aromatics. When the time is right, the grapes are hand-picked in the cool, early morning hours and transported immediately to the winery. Whole cluster pressing gently removes the juice from the skins and seeds, preserving fresh, vivid fruit flavors. The juice is transferred to French oak barrels for both primary and malolactic fermentation. This helps to fully integrate the fruit and oak components. The wine rests in barrel for nine months, gently aging on the "lees" (yeast sediment). The wines in barrel are stirred every three weeks to impart a round, creamy mouthfeel to the finished wine. At this point, the winemaking team tastes through all the Russian River Valley lots, searching for the nine barrels that best capture the unique characteristics of the vintage. The Nine Barrel blend is layered together and the wine is returned to one-year-old French oak to age for another five months before bottling.

A juicy, appealing mouthfeel is enveloped by flavors of shortbread and roasted marshmallow, fresh pear and a slight toastiness, leading to a rich yet elegant finish.
