La Cartuja Priorat 2015

Winemaker's Notes:

" Smoky, spicy dark berries and mocha appear on the nose and in the mouth, with a subtle mineral nuance building in the glass. Tangy acidity adds lift and definition to the juicy, sharply focused palate. Finishes long and minerally with slow-building dusty tannins. Aged in used French oak barrels for six month. In the context of Priorat, this wine delivers excellent value."- Importer's website

Deep, spicy raspberry with stone minerals and tones of roasted meat jus. Very well built wine! Bold and dry, but smooth. Great minerality. Crushed rocks and wet steel with graphite, blueberries and raspberries. Great purity, texture and length. 91 pts. 12/1/12

Good price for a Priorat wine. but: very strong, maybe almost too strong. Dried berries but a really intensive alcohol gout.

An amazing value — wines of this quality from Priorat are rarely under $30! Inky, dense and full of robust spices. Drink this with a big juicy steak, especially off the grill.

A spectacular offering from Priorato that sells for a song (most wines from this region are in the $50–150 or higher range), the 2011 La Cartuja is a 4,000 case blend of 70% Garnacha and 30% Carinena (3,000 cases are being exported to the USA). It was aged for eight months in 50% new and 50% used French oak. The wine possesses phenomenal minerality along with notes of crushed rocks/wet steel, graphite, blueberries and raspberries, medium to full-bodied flavors, and sensational purity, texture and length. It should drink nicely for a decade or more.

Opaque ruby. Blackberry, smoky minerals and a floral note on the nose. Sappy dark berry flavors show very good depth and pick up bitter cherry and licorice nuances with air. Finishes with sweet, gentle tannins, spicy persistence and nervy cut. This wine delivers very good value for a Priorat.

Winemaker's notes: Oak-aged for 8 months in french oak barrels; deep purple; full of red berries with hints of minerals and dried herbs. A medium bodied wine, silky texture, specie rich, black cherries on the finish.

Sitting on the deck with a friend in the cool of the evening, the bottle is opened.Legs of glycerin cascade down the glass into an opulent pool of blueberry essence.Swirling notes of lavender dance in the rain.A harmonic balance. Naturersquo;s perfection.Grilled lamb comes to mind. Moon lights the sky; that which is lost is found from within.Let your spirit flyhellip; a fine wine will take you there.

The Priorat regionrsquo;s production of wines is limited, due to the steep slopes and rocky soil. These old vines struggle for water and yield small amounts of fruit. The conditions contribute to the dense concentration, deep color and dark fruit. This is an exquisite bottle of wine at a real bargain price! A very tasty blend; the talent of the winemaker shows through with a nicely balanced and structured wine. Enjoy this with braised short ribs or a hearty lamb stew.
