La Cala Vermentino 2008 - 88 Points, Wine Review Online/ For those unfamiliar with the Vermentino grape, this wine is a good place to start. For those of you familiar with that grape, I suggest you also grab a bottle of this wine the next time you’re grilling fish. My colleague here at WRO, Mary Ewing Mulligan, recently extolled the many virtues of this Italian grape, which many winemakers have told me, “needs to grow within sight of the sea.” This light bodied refreshing one from Sardinia’s most widely known producers is fresh and bracing, with an intriguing, slightly salty lift in the finish. It’s a terrific choice for simply prepared seafood, such as grilled sea bass with sprinkled with olive oil and lemon.
Obscure whites are summer's gems/ As far as white wines go, most of us have been exposed to Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc and Riesling. These "Big Three," as they are often referred to, produce some of the most stunning wines in the world. However, if you're ready to take a walk on the wild side, here are some other fabulous choices. Vermentino di Sardegna (ver-mehn-TEE-noh): You'll find flavors of apple, pear and a mouthwatering minerality that pairs beautifully with summer seafood dishes. Look for Sella & Mosca La Cala Vermentino.
A Lesson in Indian Flavors/ Mango Shrimp; WINE - Bright citrusy 2007 Sella & Mosca La Cala Vermentino
Spring Bouquets/ By maintaining a modest 12 percent alcohol level, the Sella & Mosca keeps its Vermentino refreshing without sacrificing the distinctive lemon oil-tropical fruit character this variety is known for. Coming from the Mediterranean island of Sardinia, it's a natural with seafood- especially light, buttery fish such as Chilean sea bass and mahi-mahi
Great Values from Italy/ Sella e Mosca is another of the Sardinian estates worth keeping an eye on. There wines are of terrific value. The 2006 Vermentino di Sardegna is a clean, minerally white with suggestions of flowers and white peaches. It offers good length and a crisp, refreshing finish.
