Intense nose with mineral shadings under Hungarian blackberry candy and dried strawberry notes, a touch of wood/ American oak, a touch of pepper, a little bit of toasty chocolate chip cookie, all meld together offering nice complexity. Big entry with wonderful freshness and a distinct old-vines feel. Depth without great weight and the alcohol is held in balance by the rich fruit flavors. After an initial vanilla note there is plenty of big blackberry boysenberry fruit with a lightly peppery, arugula, watercress kind of spice. Brilliant mouthfeel , very fresh with ripe tannins, great acid balance, just a touch of heat on the long, sweetly fruited finish with a gentle brambly spiciness with a hint of eucalyptus. Opulent and intense, with just a gorgeous heady nose, but balanced. Very pure Zinfandel. Vanilla, spice and cherry flavors. Give it some time to open up.
Tasy wine for a resonable price. Tastes of old style and new world zin. Fruit is tight but velvety. We enjoyed it - cheers!
Vegetal & tar notes up front with hints of Dark Berry behind in the nose. (The vegeal notes do not distract but rather add character) In the mouth gives rich dark berry and chocolate flavors tobacco & tar supported by a nice blend of astrigency and smooth tannins. Nice Black pepper finish. Very enjoyable wine & price -- one of my favorites of the night at the blind zin tasting.

A Zinfandel wine from California in USA. 2003 Kunde Estate Zinfandel 1500ml
Zinfandel gives winegrowers fits because of uneven ripening. Winemakers always want all their berries within a certain range of ripeness, because this ensures that flavors and sugars and everything else have some internal coherence. Zin, on the other hand, likes to produce bunches that are green on one side, raisins on the other, and “perfectly ripe” in the middle. Uneven growing conditions only make it worse, as they did in 2003 in the North Coast. Some Zin bunches began raisining (on one side, anyway) in early September, a month earlier than usual.Kunde dealt with the challenge by going with nature (and blending in 11 percent of Petite Sirah). The wine was fermented with native yeasts that lived on the grape skins, and only 20 percent of the barrels used for aging were new. You can definitely smell how ripe the wine got – almost like mulled wine – but it also has lovely orangey citrus accents, too, because the acidity is bright and fresh and the wine’s only 14.1 percent alcohol. It also offers brambly palate spread and firm tannins, a mouth-filling entry and good lift through to the finish. Well done.
