Kunde Estate Winery Chardonnay Nu Sonoma Valley 2013

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Earthy and slightly minerally on the nose with dried apple, pineapple and dried floral tones that have a sage like edge. In the mouth this is focused with a big acid spine that keeps this fresh and juicy but not weighty. The flavors are a touch soft and subtle but recall nectarines and apples in a creamy, creamcicle style that grows on the long finish which has a delightfully sneaky return of sweet orchard fruits. Eminently drinkable 90pts

A touch of toast and light wood spice greets the nose over sweet yellow berried fruit. The mouthfeel is polished and soft with light notes of caramel and wood spice accented the core of sweet roasted peaches accented with a hint of white pepper. the finish is clean as a bell with a fine mineral vein if just a tad short. 89pts

Baked apple pastry on the nose with hints of tropical fruits. Nice spicy apple and pear notes with good weight. - Tasted at winery Feb 2011

Closed nose, with buttered corn, oak and a little pear. Oak bomb on palate. Some cookie flavors, almost no fruit. Way overprocessed. $16

The sweetness of oak contrasts drier, earth tones in this wine, balancing butterscotch with scents of chalk. Lees add a whole grain flavor. For roast veal.

Bright, lively and refreshing, with zesty pear, nutmeg, citrus and tangerine notes. Drink now through 2004.

There's meatiness in the flavors of this wine, a savory character to balance the sweeter peppermint notes. Chill it for a salad of smoked turkey and avocado.

A lively style, with fresh floral, peach and nectarine flavors that finish with a touch of citrus. Little in the way of oak. Drink now.

A fine young estate Chardonnay from these growers-turned-producers in the heart of the valley. Displays clean and pure apple and peach flavors, and enough oak to season with vanilla and woody spices. Balanced and pretty, and a good match for salmon or crab.

Kunde's winemaker tasting notes liken their estate Chardonnay to a cinnamon bun, which threw me off at first. Upon further reflection, however, I started to think, "well, I guess it is." This wine is rich and creamy, with yeasty bread dough aromas and distinct cinnamon notes, and peeking out beneath the buttery oak are crisp apple, guava and banana flavors. The smooth and mellow finish is substantial and lingering, making the Kunde a definite winner in the $10 California Chardonnay category!

Here's a big, ripe, creamy, oaky Chardonnay. The oak stars, contributing flamboyant vanilla, char and woody spices, but there's plenty of fruit flavor ranging from apples and peaches all the way to papayas.
