Kunde Estate Chardonnay Sonoma Valley Estate Bottled 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

“Referring to a grape like Chardonnay as “white” doesn’t do it justice. The beautiful blocks used to craft the 2008 Kunde Reserve Chardonnay grow in bunches with small, luscious globes that turn a beautiful golden color when ripe. They look so wonderful that you want to pop them in your mouth! But it took barrel fermentation to fully unlock all the beautiful apple and floral scents of this wine, which also added flavors of bread dough, cinnamon and nutmeg. Poached salmon with a creamy Dijon dill sauce is a treat you might want to try with this delicious wine. You can almost taste the sun in the golden wine that could only come from Kunde’s Sonoma Valley Vineyards.”

Light and fresh on the nose with notes of sweet pear, peach and lime gently topped with touches of herb, anise, and gentle smoky wood spice. On entry this is quite delicate and elegant with a lush, round feel showing lovely integration. The flavors are a bit spicier than the aromas with polished, vanilla tinged notes of crisp apple and peach. The finish shows that touch of anise again with a long gentle feel to the lime and peach toned finale. 91pts

buttered popcorn aromas combined with nuances of pear and rich vanilla. the palate extends to oak, pear, juicy golden apples, textured round mouth feel and fairly full in body.

Kundersquo;s winemaker tasting notes liken their estate Chardonnay to a cinnamon bun, which threw me off at first. Upon further reflection, however, I started to think, ldquo;well, I guess it is.rdquo; This wine is rich and creamy, with yeasty bread dough aromas and distinct cinnamon notes, and peeking out beneath the buttery oak are crisp apple, guava and banana flavors. The smooth and mellow finish is substantial and lingering, making the Kunde a definite winner in the $10 California Chardonnay category!

Marked by pleasant earthy citrus and green fruit notes, with crisp apple and honeydew melon character, this medium- to full-bodied wine ends with a clean aftertaste. Drink now through 2015.

The sweetness of oak contrasts drier, earth tones in this wine, balancing butterscotch with scents of chalk. Lees add a whole grain flavor. For roast veal.

The Maconnais-styled 2000 Chardonnay Sonomarsquo;s (30,000 cases produced from 60% barrel and 40% tank-fermented fruit) cooler growing season and higher acids have given the wine a European-like delicacy and crispness. Enjoy it over the next year. While this easy to like, accessible effort lacks complexity, it is a faithful representation of its varietal character, and is meant to offer plenty of up-front fruit as well as pleasure. The wine was produced from 100% estate fruit from the Kunde family vineyards in Sonoma Valley. There has been considerable replanting of some of Kundersquo;s major vineyards.

A fine young estate Chardonnay from these growers-turned-producers in the heart of the valley. Displays clean and pure apple and peach flavors, and enough oak to season with vanilla and woody spices. Balanced and pretty, and a good match for salmon or crab.

Ripe and full-bodied with tiers of fruit flavors ranging from green apples and peaches to pears and mango. None-too-subtle oak adds vanilla, smoke and butterscotch elements. Just enough residual sugar for it to drink a bit like an orange-vanilla milk shake.
