Kunde Estate Chardonnay Sonoma Valley 2009
"The 2009 Kunde Family Estate Sonoma Valley Chardonnay reflects, once again, the consistent good fortune that comes from our particular location in the valley. This vintage was cooler than normal, helping us retain the crisp natural acid structure that is so important in creating a lively Chardonnay. But our vineyards sit at a transition point where the climate starts to warm, giving us ripe flavors of pears and pineapples, with just a hint of allspice and mandarin orange in the finish. It makes us think of pan-seared halibut with rosemary or simply-seasoned grilled chicken breasts and summer squash as the perfect accompaniments. Serve it cool, just above refrigerator temperature, to best appreciate all the complex flavors.

Crisp Granny Smith apple on the nose with some herbal green tones and asparagus. Th apple flavors are pleasant but the vegetal green tones in this wine are a distraction. Far too herbaceous. - Tasted at winery Feb 2011

Kunde is a family owned wine estate in Sonoma Valley that’s been around for about 100 years. All of its wines are estate bottled, produced from grapes grown in its own 1,850 acres of vineyards, which is very unique in this day and age. What else is unique about Kunde is their commitment to sustainable farming and environmentally beneficial practices throughout the winery. The state of California recognized Kunde Estate and awarded it the Governors Environmental and Economic Leadership Award. In a state known for leading the way on environmental initiatives, this is its highest environmental honor. But what really matters is that with all of this they make outstanding wines. This Chardonnay is partially barrel fermented and then aged 7 months in oak adding a spice and vanilla flavor dimension to the already complex pear and fig nuances.
