Kunde Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma Valley Reserve 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

“High on the hillsides above Kunde Family Estate are several blocks of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot that begin at an elevation of 800 feet, clinging to a steep slope that ends in a rock-strewn plateau some 400 feet above. The vines that live here are small and hearty; they have to be tough to send down their roots through all that rock! Although yields are low, the payoff comes in dark colored, concentrated fruit. This is a powerful wine, with a sultry nose of blackberries, spice, and olives. The flavors of cherries, cassis, and dark chocolate are held in a rich texture that comes from an excellent tannin structure. If it seems that we tend to rave about our vineyards, this delicious wine will show you why we do!”

Chocolate, crème de cassis and a touch of sweet bacon fat greet the nose followed by emerging notes of vanilla and light toast. On entry this is quite tight and focused with moderate but obvious tannins. The mid-palate shows some nice wood spice tones with notes of pencil lead over the core of pure black currant fruit. There are incipient hints of herbs and soft suggestions of chocolate emerging around the edges of the fruit. The finish shows fine clarity to the fruit and is clipped a bit by the tannins as they close down. This needs a year or two to fully integrate, or several hours in a decanter, but has excellent balance and purity already so can only improve. 91pts

Chalky nose with kiwi and banana. Full-bodied and dry mouth that's long. Acids are too much for me.

Cherries and black plum flavors. Nice smooth attack with notes of dried cranberry and cherry. Sweet raspberries dominate on a finish backed by cedar flavors.

Nose of red and black berries. It has fresh berry tones and bright acid. Big baking spice on the finish which detracts a bit from the berry fruit. - Tasted at winery Feb 2011

Delicious and smooth red wine. My husband opened the bottle and I could smell the wine from across the room.
