Kumeu River Village Chardonnay Blanc 2007
The estate was founded in 1944 but has made its reputation with Chardonnay which was first planted in 1979 at about the same time that the Finns planted their first vineyard at Neudorf. Other grapes and wines are now proving popular and successful, but it is the Chardonnay which put Kumeu River on the map. All the chardonnay fruit comes from the village of Kumeu, just NW of Auckland, and is either estate-owned or estate-managed. This is a warmer climate, at the "top" of New Zealand and the wines have corresponding weight and richness, buttressed by some new oak, but always with a marvellously bracing citrusy acidity.
Editorial Reviews for Kumeu River Village Chardonnay Blanc
Perfumey and lean on the nose with white fleshed orchard fruits edged in dusty herbal tones. On the palate this shows a nice touch of richness yet maintains a light, balanced feel with an almost steely edge to the apple and lime oil core of fruit. The finish is cleansing and spicy with an almost salty note and a strong steely finale yet without much overt minerality, but this is zesty and pure. 89pts
A bit woody on the nose with lots of nutty, toasty, barrel-fermented elements. Very fine in the mouth, with a firm acid spine and a touch of wood tannin helping to fill out what otherwise is a fairly faceted wine. The fruit comes off as a bit simple here, but the wine’s texture -- ethereal and vibrant -- is very appealing. This shows great ripeness without the sweetness you might expect. 91pts
