Kuleto Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2009

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Fine French oak nose, perfumed, lots of floral hints, with a bit of herb/licorice – lovely entry, transparent, nice ripe tannins, juicy acids, huge fruit follow through on the back end, licorice, deep herbal, mineral, really ripe fruit sweetness but not that much weight, great persistence, tight roll of tobacco leaf on the back end, bit of spice, nice thick layers of flavors on the long finish. This really shows exceptional balance. 92pts

In 1992, culinary entrepreneur Pat Kuleto assembled five parcels from cattle ranchers to create a 761-acre ranch of wild hillside land on the eastern edge of the Napa Valley. Marrying the eye of a master designer and the heart of a vintner, Pat perceived the vast potential for a world-class vineyard on the mountainous land overlooking Lake Hennessey, Pritchard Hill and the towns of Rutherford and St. Helena. For Pat, the building of his rustically elegant Tuscan-style home, Villa Cucina, and the planting of the surrounding Kuleto Estate vineyards represented the next step in the evolution of a life committed to gracious living and excellence. Tasted at snooth pop-up wine event in NYC. 14.7% alcohol. Heavy for a Cab.

Medium garnet color. Great bright red fruits on the palate and nose. Sweet fragrant floral style of cabernet with cassis, red cherries, and red plums. Good mouthfell and purity. A slighly elevated acid level does not detract from this crowd pleaser. 92 points as a QPR.

Bright and youthful. Still intense cassis and vibrant red fruits. The acid is leveling out and my notes below pretty much still sum it up. The only difference is the reddish fruits now. Very very nice.

Ultra dark intense crimson color with the slightest purple edge. The nose shows some anise, currant, cherries, cassis, and espresso. On the palate there is a wonderful purity and lushness. A dark fruited medley with espresso and cocoa. This Cabernet has an amazing soft mouthfeel and a lilt balance of fine tannins and acid. To me this is more of a drinking wine than a food wine. This is a truly special Cabernet, especially when you take into account its cost; $40. A modern day Napa QPR. Over the past few months this wine has evolved nicely. It has picked up much more character, and has ironed out its rough edges. Drinks like today’s $100 Napas. Wow

A super dark inky purple core with opaque intensity. Pretty perfume of dark blackberry and black cassis fruit lifts from the glass. Then, mocha and coffee, fresh earth and pulverized rock round out the nose of this cabernet. The palate is simply deli... Andy Frieden. Plays it right down the middle, a food-friendly Cab that doesn?t knock you sideways with opulence, just a good, balanced, full-bodied wine. With cassis and oak flavors and a fine acid-tannin balance, it won?t compete with food. Best now through
