Krutz Family Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Stagecoach Vineyard 2006

Member Review by InWineTruth:

Opaque violet jam, aromas of black fruits, and cellar woods, Stagecoach Vineyards mountain flavors of blackberries, currants, spice and wood smoke to a harmonious, long finish. Tasted it, loved it, bought it at Cellars of Sonoma.

Krutz Family Cellars:
I guess it all started in 1990 when my folks stumbled into The Cheese Shop in Carmel, CA. Had they not step foot in that store they may not had been turned onto wine in the fashion they were and in turn they may not have had the ammunition (wine) to share with their children when it was time to do so. I guess it all started in 1990 when my folks stumbled into The Cheese Shop in Carmel, CA. Had they not step foot in that store they may not had been turned onto wine in the fashion they were and in turn they may not have had the ammunition (wine) to share with their children when it was time to do so. As Fred and Cherry, the folks, knew their offspring quite well they started building a cellar that could withstand the fierce and very frequent barrage of attacks that have been thoroughly and precisely planned out for 21 years. And so it began! The war for knowledge of what it was in the bottle that sparks the senses and imagination in ways that no other beverage can come close to doing so. After finishing under-grad at The University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) in 2001 I took some months off to travel a bit and try and figure out at the same time what it was I would do for a “job”. Upon returning I quickly realized I still had not a clue and per the recommendation from the folks I decided to move to Carmel, CA and join the gang at The Cheese Shop. It was here where I started analytically breaking down wine and really paying attention to the details and components of wine. With the help of Micheal Burke, Kent Torrey, and Dylan and Tobe Sheldon of Sheldon Wines, I was encouraged to take on the art of making wine. In 2003 Krutz Family Cellars was born. Weighing in at about 60 cases total between three separate varietals (Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and a Grenache/Syrah blend) Boutique or Small doesn’t even come close to describing production. Microscopic would be more accurate. That was some of the most fun I’ve ever had…at work too! I thought, “Damn, if I can have this much fun at work, I’m in!” In 2004 I produced 170 cases total (Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Sauvignon) and for 05, which is the current release, a total of 450 cases, and in barrel for 06 I have about 900 cases. I am growing as the demand for Krutz Family Cellars is growing. Still, at this level, I would say that it is microscopic production as compared to other wineries’ production. To make wines of varietal character, vineyard character, and do so in small lots from single vineyards is what I envisioned in 2003 and still hold foremost now. To be able to know what each and every barrel is up to at all times is also something that I hold of the utmost importance. It is for this reason that I hope to max out at somewhere around 1,500-2,000 cases of total production within the next couple years and re-evaluate keeping the founding principals in mind. Finally, wine is about sharing with family and friends alike. It is for this reason I filed the DBA as “Krutz Family Cellars”. Anyone who has a glass or bottle is now a part of the extended Krutz Family. I hope you enjoy tasting as much as I did in crafting. Read less
