Krug Grande Cuvee Brut Champagne . Gift Set NV

External Review by Premier Wine & Spirits:

Henri Krug says he thinks about this blend as a composer would think about a symphony, with more that 50 reserve wines serving as his orchestra. It would sound like a trite analogy if the music weren’t there in the glass. In fact, it may be the most useful way to think about this sumptuous Champagne as you taste its layers of flavor, its complexity that can’t be limited to spice or game or white chocolate, its broad flavors that last for minutes. The details keep enlisting the palate in a drive toward the sum, toward a completion of the flavor, the tiny, persistent bead adding to the harmonic intensity. So what if you’re tone deaf: Simply drink the wine. The freshness is brilliant, the depth of flavor sublime.

A powerhouse. Big and brooding, showing toast, nut, coffee and oxidative aromas that pick up freshness on the palate, where citrus and dough flavors intervene. Really firm and focused, with complexity and character.

Pale bronze. Knockout nose combines smoke, maple syrup, fennel, chlorophyll, ginger, nutmeg and orange oil, all buttressed by a pungent, gamey, brothy element. Wonderfully ripe, smooth and harmonious, with the wine’s sheer thickness and sweetness of fruit perfectly balanced by rather powerful but integrated acids. Compelling yeast autolyis character gives this multi-vintage blend great complexity. Remarkably slow-building, palate-staining finish. Ultimately comes across as sweeter than the comparatively forbidding Clos du Mesnil but you can’t get either one of these remarkable wines off your palate.

One whiff and you know this is serious stuff. The aromas of baking brioche, coconut, candied citrus and leather pick up roasted coffee and grilled nuts on the palate, permeating the senses. Profound depth and complexity, offering a unique Champagne experience. Drink now through 2006.

Barrel fermentation of the base wines, uncommon in Champagne, and the addition of up to 40 percent reserve wines from older vintages combine to give the Champagne its distinctive flavor, depth and complexity. Although it’s owned by Louis Vuitton-Moët-Hennessy, co-directors Henri and Rémi Krug run this house like a small family estate.

Nonvintage Champagne National Champion. Mild straw. Medium full body. Medium acid and fruit. Nuts, bread, biscuits. Impressively mature, with moderate depth and richness. Still retaining some tightness of youth, however, with crisp acids enlivening fruit nicely.

Deeply scented with butter, spice and citrus. The rich, full, complex palate of buttery and spicy citrus is beautifully balanced, complex, rich and long — super, a great Grand Cuvée.
