Krug Champagne Blend Champagne Brut 2000

Winemaker's Notes:

96 points Wine & Spirits: Building on the exotic character of the vintage, this wine's volumes of flavor range from lobster broth to star anise; the yeasty crust of a fresh baguette; the spritz of lemon zest. It's a vibrant 2000, remarkable for the delicacy and intricate detail attained within the confines of a single year. Oyster bliss with a West Coast Kumamoto. (Dec 2012)

This vintage apparently had a slightly different ratio of Chardonnay to PN/PM than what you'd expect. What always fascinates me with vintage Krug is the difference between the palate and nose. They can almost seem completely different. The nose has these savory spice notes as well as the standard nuttiness. On the palate, the nuttiness seems to be gone and replaced with a slight baked apple-ness. The finish ends well with a bit of an unexpected crispness.

Mature and powerful, this vintage of Krug is layered with autolytic flavors, fresher peach notes, ginger and lime. Itandrsquo;s a classical style, a grand wine that gives more than most 1998s its density and potent length of flavor implying further development ahead.

An ornate and powerful vintage for the cellars of krugistes, this is breathtaking Champagne. It is as layered and complex as a grand cru Burgundy, though more searing in its adolescent acidity, leaving a tooth buzz in its wake. With air, the layers of the wine begin to show in flavors of marzipan, fresh cream and an underlying essence of limestone. Itandrsquo;s severe on the surface, kinder underneath. Although complete and needing five to ten years of bottle age to build into its full grandeur.

Bright true gold with a brisk bead. Deeply concentrated honey, pear skin, orange peel, peach pit, botanical herb and floral aromas are brightened by smoky minerals. Chewy citrus and pit fruit flavors stain the palate and are given a youthfully tangy edge by nervy acidity, gaining strength with air. Finishes with powerful grip and resounding echoes of honey and citrus pith. A serious, painfully young wine that needs patience; I wouldnandrsquo;t go near it for at least another six or seven years.

Displays precision focus and detail, framed by well-honed acidity and offering fine, pointillist-like texture. Rich, with layer upon layer of flavor, showing fruit and floral notes of dried apricot and pineapple, chamomile and crystallized honey and savory notes of ground coffee, roast almond, dried herbs and oyster shell. Ends with a long, long, mouthwatering finish. Drink now through 2028.

The 1998 Vintage is extremely primary at this stage. Today the wine remains mostly about pure, unadulterated expression of fruit, but the Krug house style is nevertheless present. This powerful Champagne needs time in the cellar to develop its full range of aromas and flavors, but it is impressive and should age quite well. The 1998 is only the third (and last) vintage Krug declared in the 1990s. Anticipated maturity: 2012andndash;2028.
