What to Expect

California has long struggled with Pinot Noir. Finding the right vineyards for this most fickle of grape, one that enjoys a cool growing season yet needs warmth close to harvest to fully ripen, has proven a challenge in such a sunny state. Cooler areas eventually became identified; the Santa Rita Hills, Russian River Valley and Mendocino's Anderson valley are all prime spots for Pinot Noir in California. Unlike the lighter colored and sometimes delicate Pinots of Burgundy, California produces many rich, deep Pinots full of slightly chewy dark berry and cherry fruits with hints of cola, Asian spices and forest floor frequently adding complexity.

Reviews

Enjoyed 2 half bottles at Picco Restaurant in Larkspur (out of full bottles). The first bottle was amazingly smooth, light, complex, not fruity, a superb pinot. Oddly, the second bottle had an initial musty odor, characteristic of an aged italian or french wine; I suspect it was stored in a cold cellar. It was also excellent, but needed to open a little and reach the correct temperature. This is as good as Pinot gets.

Awesome pinot. Full bodied with lots of deep fruit that is just bursting out of the glass. Definitively new world.

Rating: 89/100 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 132, May/June 2007 ($45) Bright red. Spicy cherry and wild strawberry aromas, with dark chocolate and licorice accents. Supple red and dark berry jam flavors show good depth and are accented by cracked pepper and mace. Finishes broad and sweet, with very good length and a refreshingly bitter cherry skin tone.

A nose of tarry cherry; smooth and round. The palate has forward and focused dark cherry, licorice and toast.

Bold, ripe, expansive and expressive, with layers of spice, black cherry, cola, anise and light toasty oak. Tightly focused, rich and complex, this maintains a beam of fruit and finishes with a long, complex aftertaste. Drink now through 2011. 1,821 ... Wine Spectator.
