What to Expect

California has long struggled with Pinot Noir. Finding the right vineyards for this most fickle of grape, one that enjoys a cool growing season yet needs warmth close to harvest to fully ripen, has proven a challenge in such a sunny state. Cooler areas eventually became identified; the Santa Rita Hills, Russian River Valley and Mendocino's Anderson valley are all prime spots for Pinot Noir in California. Unlike the lighter colored and sometimes delicate Pinots of Burgundy, California produces many rich, deep Pinots full of slightly chewy dark berry and cherry fruits with hints of cola, Asian spices and forest floor frequently adding complexity.

We had this at Epic steakhouse. It was the best wine I have ever had.

Bright cherry and violet hints in the nose with a touch of herb leading into the plum and dark berry flavors.

This wine disappointed me, in fact it was gross. Too much alcohol, too much oak and too much thick syrupy body. The only thing we could have paired with this glob of viscous mass would have been some sort gamey meat like boar with a reduction sauce, otherwise, NOT my style of pinot noir

Tightly wound and intense, with firm, spicy, well-focused blackberry and wild berry fruit that has both lively acidity and well-grounded tannins. Needs time. Best from 2008 through 2013. 1,812 cases made. -JL Wine Spectator. A Pinot Noir wine from California in USA. 2005 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Russian River Valley 750ml

Rating: 88/100 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 132, May/June 2007 ($45) Medium red. Jammy raspberry and cola aromas complicated by mocha, red licorice and an exotic hint of peach pit. Sweet and velvety in the mouth, with creamy raspberry and plum preserve flavors and good heft. The weighty, round finish features a clingy red fruit preserve quality. I'd opt for drinking this on the young side.
