Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Russian River Valley(2004)

Our 2004 Russian River Pinot Noir is a blend of four vineyards; Cohn, Koplen, Amber Ridge and Bly. All of these vineyards lie in the middle to northern Russian River Valley. The style is deep and rich with a velvety texture that is prominent from start to finish. We recommend cellaring this wine until 2007 with additional cellar time being beneficial.
Aromatics: Fresh red stone fruit, raspberry and deep cherry with hints of 5 spice and
cola.
On the palate: Rich raspberry and juicy ripe cherries predominate. Layers of cinnamon,
plum and vanilla create an elegant read more...

An extremely ripe nose that is nicely complex with aromas of red and dark berry fruit, menthol and a hint of cough syrup lead to exceptionally rich, soft and forward flavors that are quite sweet and notably powerful while coating the mouth and staining the palate. This delivers admirable intensity but the alcohol and acid separate somewhat on the long finish. An interesting wine that doesn't lack for size and weight.

($38) Good full red. Red fruits along with lower-toned loam, coffee and meat. Round and fat, with modest complexity but good sweetness of fruit. Has just enough acidity to maintain its shape and balance. Finishes firmly tannic, with lingering sweet fruit.

This partnership between Dan Kosta and Michael Browne strives to create overtly super ripe fruit-driven pinots and while I'm told that elevated alcohol levels are not the goal of the ripeness, it must be said that they are not shy. As such, I strongly suggest serving these wines cool and keeping them cool to keep the warmth in the background. Prices run between $18 and $52.
