Napa Valley hails from a uniquely rocky 2.7-acre vineyard at the back of the Hudson ranch in Carneros where the rolling terrain of Carneros becomes the foothills of Mt. Veeder. This matters because here we have the cool, perfume-preserving climate of Carneros along with the special rocky soil of volcanic parent material, which occurs otherwise only at higher elevation. Bright full ruby. Wild aromas of blackberry, black licorice and dark chocolate; faint medicinal and roasted elements. Very dense, sappy and sweet, but quite youthfully restrained, thanks to the wine's strong mineral component and nearly medicinal black cherry syrup flavor. Very deep and very long but holding back more than it's showing. As with the 2000, the tannins are fine. "This is like a normal Chave, while the 2000 version is more like a full-blown Cote-Rotie," notes Kongsgaard.
