Kongsgaard Chardonnay Napa Valley 2015

Winemaker's Notes:

96-98 points Robert Parker: The 2015 Chardonnays are incredibly concentrated, as you might expect because of the low yields. He makes two cuvées -- his Napa cuvée and the homage to his father, The Judge. Both are made from low-yielding Old Wente clonal selections. The 2015 Chardonnay, which is two-thirds Hudson clone and one-third Hyde clone, offers plenty of muscle, rich, extracted honeysuckle, orange blossom, tangerine oil and crushed/powdered rock in a full-bodied, rather large-scaled effort reminiscent of truly profound Grand Cru from Burgundy, the likes of which we don't really see anymore. However, they certainly appear in increasing numbers from great terroirs in California. This wine has spent its time for nearly two years in 80% new French oak prior to being bottled unfiltered. (Dec 2016)

Fifth-generation Napa natives John and Maggy Kongsgaard produce The Judge, Chardonnay, VioRous, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Shy-bearing vineyards and traditional low-intervention winemaking techniques produce powerful, graceful wines — high intensity expressions of vineyard and variety. The core of their endeavor is the ten-acre vineyard they planted in the late 1970s on a rocky hilltop in southern Napa Valley which has belonged to the Kongsgaard family since the 1920s. In addition to these family acres, they direct the farming under long-term contract on another seven acres in the Napa Carneros and three acres near St. Helena. The winery, on the eastern rim of Napa Valley, is a cave drilled into the volcanic rock. Production is limited to what they can make with their own hands. Read less
