Kongsgaard Chardonnay Napa Valley 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

[95 pts Stephen Tanzer] ''Pale' bright yellow. Aromas of lemon curd minerals and crushed stone lifted by citrus zest. Intensely flavored but youthfully austere with brisk acid giving grip and shape to the complex notes of spices flowers herbs and minerals. This one has a lower pH than the '05 noted Kongsgaard' who told me that his 2006 chardonnays took a good three to four months to ferment their sugars (his new cellar maintains a consistent temperature of 58o).'

Fifth-generation Napa natives John and Maggy Kongsgaard produce The Judge, Chardonnay, VioRous, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Shy-bearing vineyards and traditional low-intervention winemaking techniques produce powerful, graceful wines — high intensity expressions of vineyard and variety. The core of their endeavor is the ten-acre vineyard they planted in the late 1970s on a rocky hilltop in southern Napa Valley which has belonged to the Kongsgaard family since the 1920s. In addition to these family acres, they direct the farming under long-term contract on another seven acres in the Napa Carneros and three acres near St. Helena. The winery, on the eastern rim of Napa Valley, is a cave drilled into the volcanic rock. Production is limited to what they can make with their own hands. Read less

Heavily oaked aromas yet the palate is light and slightly floral. Very clean, bright and featuring a crisp citrus acidity. Lingering finish of grapefruit that I would love to pair with a mellow cheese -- there's enough of a nutty character there to support food. I would rate this wine higher but I find it fairly flat and academic (textbook Chardonnay). It's very clean but -- I wish it had more character! But wow, does it linger...

Balanced and elegant with tones of nuttiness, honey, and citrus.

The Kongsgaard family has owned the parcel of land that produces this amazingly dense and concentrated Chardonnay since the 1920s. The vineyard sits atop a rocky hill in southeast Napa where the vines must struggle to obtain nutrients. John Kongsgaard ferments in old oak using indigenous yeasts.

The 2002 Chardonnay appears to be slightly behind the 2001, but it is one year younger. Already complex, with tremendous opulence, it is made in an exuberant, in-your-face California style with abundant glycerin, flavor intensity, and alcohol. This extravagantly rich effort should be consumed during its first 5-6 years of life. Drink 2003-2009.

The 2006 Chardonnay reveals high acidity. When I tasted it at age 12 months, it had still not had any SO2 added, and it was still on its primary lees. I have written at length about Kongsgaard's belief that Chardonnay has to first die in the barrel, then resurrect itself, and unless a winemaker has the guts to watch that happen, it is doubtful they will achieve the complexity that Kongsgaard does on a routine basis. The 2006 is young, primary, and elegant with plenty of citrus and tangerine oil characteristics as well as hints of quince and crushed rocks. It should prove to be long-lived given its acid profile.
