Erath wines are an expression of the land that the winery has cultivated for more than 40 years, longer than any other winery in the Dundee Hills of Oregon. The red, iron-rich Jory soils, combined with gentle breezes and warming sunshine of a marine climate, have bestowed upon Dundee a terroir of note. It has given rise to the handcrafting phenomenon, and the art of Pinot. As one of Oregon’s wine pioneers, Dick Erath had always been as tenacious in his approach to Pinot as the Pinot grape is stubborn. The engineer-turned-viticulturist was first inspired to pursue winemaking in 1965 after an early garage experiment. After completing coursework at UC-Davis in 1968, Erath relocated his family from California to the untamed red hills of Dundee. An unheated logger’s cabin on 49 acres would serve as home – and ad hoc winery – for several years. The following spring, he planted the Dundee Hill’s first wine grapes – 23 varieties. Pinot Noir flourished. By 1972, Erath had produced his first commercial wine of 216 cases – the first official wine production in the Dundee Hills. Enchanted with French varietals, he soon began testing non-California clones and was instrumental in importing French clones to Oregon in 1974. In 1976, Erath broke ground on the first winery in the Dundee Hills. Early successes, including the 1982 Pinot Noir vintage, inspired leading winemakers to move to Oregon to forge their own path in this special place. Disciplined in approach yet progressive in artistry, our winemaker Gary Horner, strives to reveal classic Oregon Pinot: light, delicate and fruit-forward. Gary’s goal of “making the best Pinot Noir the region has to offer – time honored, authentic and uniquely Oregon” is matched by his reputation of excellence. Read less

Nice deep red fruit and black berry infused with spice. Good tannin and great, toasty oak on the back palate. It's a bigger, heavier style and very nicely structured. Really enjoyed it! - Tasted at winery 8/17/10

Nice wood notes amidst the red berry and spice on the nose. Good weight on the palate, with spice and wood with the fruit. Doesn't linger long, but it's tasty. - Tasted at winery 8/17/10

At 14.99 you can't go to wrong with this wine. As noted hints of berries , orange and caramel. Good on the palette with a good acidic balance and smooth finish. Good to have for informal gatherings or just for that weekend alone.

Frankly, I wasn't that impressed. Lots of dry and bright cherry with some dark, annoying tannic notes and not a lot of depth. A surprise considering the overall quality of the '08 vintage. A good value for the price but not a memorable Pinot.

Good but not great. Better wines from this region at the same price point.

Black cherry aromas, underscored by sweet mandarin orange, greet the nose as warm, clove-laced vanilla wafts gently among subtle hints of anise and caramel. The wine opens on the palate with more hints of sweet black cherry, which flows seamlessly into a supple silkiness.

Erath Vineyards in Oregon has a real hit with their entry level Pinot Noir in 2008. The Wine Spaectator said it has "true varietal character and Burgundian elegance." and Wine Enthusiast Magazine said it was "Light in texture, with pretty cherry and orange peel aromas and flavors playing against refreshing acidity, lingering nicely." A great value at under $20, don't miss it.

Tasting Notes:

This very highly rated wine has vivid aromas of spiced red plum and orange blossom. Its rich, full flavors include chocolate, caramel, and red fruit, with hints of earthy undertones. This richness combines with a balanced acidity to produce a spicy, long finish.
