Klinker Brick Winery 'Old Ghost' Old Vine Zinfandel 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

The wine has exotic spices of cardamom and black pepper on the nose, infused with bright, black cherry fruit. On the palate, it is rich, round and full-bodied with flavors of brambleberry and chocolate covered cherries yielding to a long and lingering finish. A blend of two old vine zinfandel vineyards, 89 and 98 years old.

Steve and Lori Felten, fifth generation grape growers in the Lodi region, continue the tradition of cultivating “Old Vine” Zinfandel vineyards that their ancestors planted in the early 1900’s. With roots in Germany, Russia and later the Dakotas, the family settled in Lodi, first producing watermelons. Recognizing that the soil and climate were ideal for growing grapes, they began to plant varieties that included Zinfandel, Tokay, Carignane, and Alicante. For over one hundred years, the family has cultivated the land with the aim of producing top quality fruit. Zinfandel was one of the first grape varieties to be planted in the Lodi appellation, although it had also been established in other parts of the California. Grapes were originally packed in boxes for shipment to the East Coast and Canada for the purpose of home winemaking. In the early days of production, nearly all of the Zinfandel grapes were shipped with the exception of grapes that were used for making wine at home. By the mid 1930’s, grapes were sold primarily to cooperatives and larger, private wineries with a small portion of the production shipped east. Historically, the vineyards were irrigated by flood or ditch irrigation and the inability to regulate the amount of water applied resulted in larger yields of marginal quality. In the late 1980’s, drip irrigation was introduced, providing the ability to control the amount of water applied to each vine. This resulted in the ability to control the vigor of the vine, healthier fruit and ultimately, lower yields. With the introduction of more sophisticated vineyard practices, including shoot thinning, leaf pulling, color thinning and the removal of a second crop, the ability to produce the grapes of exceptional quality was realized. Part of the extended Felten Family includes their winemaker, Barry Gnekow, who is responsible for crafting the wines from the inaugural vintage. Barry, a Davis graduate with over 25 years of experience of winemaking, has a unique ability to bring the best of the vineyard into the cellar, year after year, producing wines of distinction for Klinker Brick. Another extended family member is Lynne Whyte Barnard, the President of Klinker Brick Winery. Lynne has brought a wealth of entrepreneurial experience to the winery, having owned her on wholesale company and directing sales and marketing for prestigious wine producers in California. She was instrumental in the development of the Old Ghost wine, label design and has been responsible for selling all of the vintages produced to date, developing national and international distribution. Only Klinker Brick Zinfandel aged in French oak, Spicy, vanilla tinged blueberry fruit on the nose picks up plenty of powdered sugar berry aromas, lots of smoke, lots of nutty oak influence. There’s a lot going on here. Silky, deep and vinous in the mouth, this is a bit wiry on the palate with sour red cherry fruit early on the palate. It’s still a bit oaky but shows well integrated ginger and tobacco accents balanced by jammy blackberry and blueberry flavors. Supple, and with a fairly long finish, this remains a little jammy but is rather elegant when compared to the rest of the line-up here. Fine grained tannins extend across the backend and clip the finish, which also shows some heat. 88pts

Doesn't taste old vine... Very light and fruity. Great all purpose wine!

It is a clear, medium(+) intensity ruby colored wine that displays legs. It has a clean, developing nose of medium intensity displaying aromas of plum and red currant. It is a dry wine with medium acidity, medium tannin, high alcohol and medium body. It has medium intensity flavors of red currant, plum and vanilla with a medium length finish. It is an acceptable mid-priced wine that is ready to drink now but will not improve with time in the bottle.

Tasting. Not able to get past overwhelming taste and nose of alcohol. Possibly our bottle has turned or we just cellared past its peak (my husband is finishing his so could just be my problem).

The Old Ghost represents the best zinfandel that Klinker Brick produces each year. Brambleberry fruit aromas intermingled with anise and exotic spice, echo previous vintages. Smaller berries harvested from this vineyard block, tend to offer more “skin to flesh”, providing a greater level of tannin and structure to this wine. Pair with your prime porterhouse or grilled lamb. - Winery Cooperage: 40% French, 60% American, aged 18 months Alcohol: 15.9% Residual Sugar: .35 PH: 3.76 TA: .60g/100ml

The 2011 Old Ghost displays a deep garnet color with rich aromas of brambleberry, exotic spice, botanical garden notes and cedar shavings. Yields were a bit lower in 2011, resulting in rich concentration of color and flavor. This wine has legs! Deli cious, dark fruits fill the palate and finish with a long, silky texture. Enjoy with grilled meats, wild mushroom risotto or aged gouda. - WineryCooperage: 40% French, 60% American, aged 18 monthsAlcohol: 15.9%Residual Sugar: .33PH: 3.71TA: .66

Produced from a 100-year old vineyard, the 2010 vintage of Old Ghost is an exceptional wine that exudes explosive brambleberry flavors balanced with structure, elegance and finesse. The grapes harvested from this block are minuscule in yield and typically smaller in size, offering more "skin to flesh" resulting in higher tannins. The dense aromatics of berries and spice are coupled with the suggestion of a botanical garden, including mint, licorice, lavender and rosemary. This Old Ghost is not for the feint hearted and will command your attention. He may be the most benevolent to date... - Winery ** SOLD OUT **
