Klinker Brick Old Vine Zinfandel 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2010 vintage in Lodi was extraordinary with a long, cool growing season yielding beautiful, evenly ripened fruit. With aromas of black cherry, cedar shavings, vanilla and spice, this wine offers rich, supple flavors of cherries and plum, perfect balance and a long, smooth, lingering finish. Nutmeg, cardamom and pepper enhance an exotic nose but bright, dark fruits enhance a superb mouth filling experience. Our winemaker thinks this may be the vintage of the century.

Steve and Lori Felten, fifth generation grape growers in the Lodi region, continue the tradition of cultivating “Old Vine” Zinfandel vineyards that their ancestors planted in the early 1900’s. With roots in Germany, Russia and later the Dakotas, the family settled in Lodi, first producing watermelons. Recognizing that the soil and climate were ideal for growing grapes, they began to plant varieties that included Zinfandel, Tokay, Carignane, and Alicante. For over one hundred years, the family has cultivated the land with the aim of producing top quality fruit. Zinfandel was one of the first grape varieties to be planted in the Lodi appellation, although it had also been established in other parts of the California. Grapes were originally packed in boxes for shipment to the East Coast and Canada for the purpose of home winemaking. In the early days of production, nearly all of the Zinfandel grapes were shipped with the exception of grapes that were used for making wine at home. By the mid 1930’s, grapes were sold primarily to cooperatives and larger, private wineries with a small portion of the production shipped east. Historically, the vineyards were irrigated by flood or ditch irrigation and the inability to regulate the amount of water applied resulted in larger yields of marginal quality. In the late 1980’s, drip irrigation was introduced, providing the ability to control the amount of water applied to each vine. This resulted in the ability to control the vigor of the vine, healthier fruit and ultimately, lower yields. With the introduction of more sophisticated vineyard practices, including shoot thinning, leaf pulling, color thinning and the removal of a second crop, the ability to produce the grapes of exceptional quality was realized. Part of the extended Felten Family includes their winemaker, Barry Gnekow, who is responsible for crafting the wines from the inaugural vintage. Barry, a Davis graduate with over 25 years of experience of winemaking, has a unique ability to bring the best of the vineyard into the cellar, year after year, producing wines of distinction for Klinker Brick. Another extended family member is Lynne Whyte Barnard, the President of Klinker Brick Winery. Lynne has brought a wealth of entrepreneurial experience to the winery, having owned her on wholesale company and directing sales and marketing for prestigious wine producers in California. She was instrumental in the development of the Old Ghost wine, label design and has been responsible for selling all of the vintages produced to date, developing national and international distribution. Bold flavor from the get go. Soft mouthfeel with a sweet palate that continually builds to the finish. Notable oak backing with a hint of vanilla and noticeable alcohol. Well done.

The wine has a nice deep ruby color and the nose is pure Zinfandel with notes of black cherry, anise and cocoa powder. The taste is lovely, with some light floral notes amid rich ripe cherry and plum on the outset, transitioning into some nice licorice and baking spice midpalate. The finish is very smooth and dry, as the soft tannins lend plenty of depth and character to the long, dry finish. The nose showed spicy red and blue fruit, herbal tea, cedar and wood tones, cinnamon and a hint of cherry tobacco. On the palate, it was as smooth as silk with weighty textures. Dark fruits, spiced cookie, brown sugar and medicinal cherry were made fresh by its streamlined acidity. The finish was lasting yet pleasantly fresh and fruity. (89 points)

Let's start this by saying OMG, this is a great wine. Once I smelled it I knew I would like it. Fills the nose with that deep berry aroma. Tastes of berry, sweet on the entire mouth, vanilla, cedar, nice soft pepper spice and a wonderful taste left in the mouth. This is one of the best I've tried. Wow!

Lots of cinnamon spice on the nose with cedar. Dusty, baking spice aromas along with dried herbs and white pepper. Wild blackberry and bramble fruits. Boysenberry as well. Suave entry on the palate and medium bodied. Very flavorful with lots of zesty cinnamon spice. White pepper, dried herb and great red berry fruit. Red and black raspberry. Bramble fruits and baking spice. Nicely balanced and you'd not know by feel that it's 15.8% abv. Nice and screams out for bbq. 88 pts. 5/1/13

Aroma of cherry, berry, vanilla and a hint of cedar. Color is very dark purple. On the palate rich cherry, ripe plum, some faint hint of nutmeg along with raspberry and a peppery note. A medium long finish. The wine is jammy and really coats the whole mouth.

Smooth zin with a bit of spice. Dark red fruit, rather fruit forward. I heard this was good and I was not disappointed.
